The subject of ingesting aloe for bowel problems came up in another thread, so I thought I'd post some information from the Mayo Clinic that I came across recently on the dangers of ingesting aloe. The Mayo Clinic actually has quite an extensive warning against the ingestion of aloe, but particularly for those who suffer from hypoglycemia, liver, and kidney disorders. Here's a summary of the relevant points from the article and the link to the article itself: Aloe (Aloe Vera): Safety www.mayoclinic.com/health/aloe-vera/NS_patient-aloe/DSECTION=safety"Aloe taken by mouth may lower blood sugar levels. Caution is advised in patients with diabetes or hypoglycemia." "Use caution when aloe latex is taken by mouth in patients with kidney disease...due to theoretical risk of low blood potassium levels." "Use cautiously in patients with impaired liver function due to reports of hepatitis from taking aloe by mouth." "Avoid taking aloe latex by mouth for prolonged periods as a laxative, due to theoretical risk of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance [as well as laxative dependence]." The article then goes on to warn of a number of sudden deaths that have been linked to taking aloe injections and a whole host of side effects (some quite terrible) from both ingesting aloe and using it topically. It even warns against "using aloe on the skin for wound healing due to a lack of effect [plus adverse side effects on the skin]." I'm horrifically allergic to aloe, which is how I came across this information. I thought I'd share it since it seems to be quite relevant to the confirmed and suspected HFI'ers. Heidi
