Does anyone have problems with nappy rash after eating a limited food.? (well, your children I mean of course!) James had some cauliflower and broccolli cheese yesterday and his poor bottom was raw, weeping and bleeding, with little blisters just a few minutes after doing a BM today. No diarrhoea, but it was really bad so i wonder if it may be something to do with acidity. None of my other children ever had nappy rash like this.

Yes, Coley gets diaper rashes after having a limited item as well...
When Chelsea gets back she may be able to comment more specifically. Did you also smell an unusual odor? I haven't been able to determine what the differnt odors are to BMs but do recognize the difference in ketones and acidocis in urine...although there may be a glycerol smell too....
Anyway, Coley gets a VERY potent acidic smell to his BMs, but actually has a harder time passing them after having fructose, and a rash usually accompanies it as well.
Are there larger than normal urine outputs? Coley would 'dump' a ton, so I think that saved him from having loose stools....
He would also get frequent 'bizzare' rashes on other parts of his body as well...although that does not happen any longer since ristricting.
Not sure tht helps...

hfiinfo.proboards42.com/index.cgi?board=Children&action=display&thread=1150873492Here is a link to one particularly bad time we ran into when Nate got hold of someone's juice at daycare. I would say the blister was a good 2" x 4" and had to be bandaged for around a week. That is the worst he's ever had it. It was like his skin melted off. He does get a red and rashed bum after a bad BM. He used to jump up and tell me right when it was happening, but for some reason, over the last month he will tell me he hasn't gone even when he has which of course makes things worse. The doc told me that there was a thing called bag balm that was available over the counter in the pharmacy. When he gets into something that he's not supposed to and we know there are bad BMs coming up, the instruction is to coat him in that in advance so it will hopefully not destroy the skin. You may want to look into that.

There are lot's of different products out there...but be careful, Laurie recently found out the hardway that some of them contain sugars and can cause severe reactions...We already knew stuff chapstick, toothpaste & meds had sugar, but I've been checking everything since and was WAY surprised to find it in stuff like bubble bath & shampoo...could explain some of the 'mystery rashes' we've seen....
Under 'healthy' conditions stuff like that may not be enough to harm, but with a rash or a sick kid, it might be enough so I thought you should know...

We used to have a big problem with that but not so much anymore since she is always so constipated. I know my 3.5 year old had a horrible time with it. He doesn't have HFI, so it can also simply be the way they are.
The problem we find the most often is the build up of ketones eats through her skin. When I dip her urine after a few days of ketones she also begins to spill blood and leukocyctes. She will also complain her "coochie" hurts. This is when we have a difficult time because we always have to rule out a UTI with her kidney issues. The potent smell is typically very strong when she is that bad.
Regardless of HFI or a normal toddler issue, I really recommend acidophillus supplements. This helps neutralize the bacteria in the stomach and bowels.

Chelsea - I swear by the yogurt Coley eats every day too...I don't understand it completley, but I do know it has helped in MANY ways...Roland tried to explain it to me over on the MSN board - but I just don't get it completely...it's more than just the metabolic stuff, there is also GI stuff going on...
Whatever - it's one of those things I know helps so I keep it up! and when he skips a few days - oooooweeeeee, it's obvious!
