Come on people you think I would post anything here that cannot be proved??
In this case many times over!
1/. Archaeologists do use dental decay as an early initial indicator as to the age of a human skeleton "find" the more dental cavities the newer the find is likely to be. Dental cavities in people who died before sugar was refined and mass produced are very rare, and tend to be only rich people who could afford Honey.
2/. It is HFI people on this site who have reported having lost some or all their teeth as a result of eating Glucose!
3/. Glucose is instantly available to the bacteria in our mouths (unlike sucrose and fructose) allowing the bacteria to grow quickly. In so doing they produce an acid which is what actually rots your teeth. If you suck glucose sweets its like having your teeth sitting in a bath of acid all the time .
If you still don't believe me go ask any dentist!
What is very worrying is the statement "Some older HFI folks on here have bad teeth but its from all the vomiting they did when they were young"
No this should not be the case EVER!
If any child with HFI is vomiting at all its because 1/. They have a normal childhood tummy bug or 2/. they have eaten FAR too much sugar / Fructose!
IF its 1/. then this is very unlikely to be a long term problem. and will of course cause no tooth decay measurable.
But NO HFI child on a safe diet should vomit at all, or any more frequently than any other child!
If your child regularly vomits after you give it a particular food then why are you feeding it?
Perhaps after the HFI child accidentally eats something once in a blue moon yes, but otherwise if frequent vomiting is occurring then the HFI child's very life is in danger.. NO JOKE!
The vomiting reflex is because we have ingested a potentially damaging amount of Sucrose / Fructose, it will not happen on tiny amounts after the first few months. So far as I am able to find out anyway.
If you have an HFI child who is vomiting regularly then Please Please check the diet out because you are missing something to be sure.
IF an HFI child vomits enough to rot its teeth then its liver will be severely damaged possibly and almost certainly resulting in Life long damaged.
I repeat no HFI child will vomit any more regularly than any other child, if given HFI safe foods.. (unless there is another condition causing this).
Reflux and trouble swallowing in young children with HFI, I have been told, (I have no independent proof on this) can be as a result of liver damage. If an HFI safe diet is followed early enough then the liver can repair itself given enough time.
Because we rarely swallow tooth paste the amount of Sorbitol ingested is not a real risk to any HFI child on a good diet.
The reason we are very unlikely to swallow it is we do not like the sweet taste!.. unless..... yes you guessed it.. we have that self defense taken away from us.
The dental mouth wash as Charlie pointed out is best swapped for water, but I have never been inclined to swallow it because it tastes NASTY!
So in short Claudia just about any tooth paste will be safe for him, so do not worry
however I would avoid all the "children's" versions though, some do contain actual sugar.. or used to anyway.
Keep smiling
you have a beautiful handsome boy
