Hi all Well im not sure where to start, but after suffering most of my life with symptoms and numerous miss diagnosis my doctor is sending me for a breath test and liver biopsy to rule out HFI, so a google search later and i found myself here. My symptoms include but in no particular order: jaundice above my eyelids and yellow in eyes falling straight asleep after eating certain things abnormal liver function tests enlarged liver & spleen intense muscle pain (like a cramp) foggy headed depression gout (maybe not related?) diarrhea abdominal pain craving sweet things weight gain through no apparent reason lower back pain excessive thirst
Some of these are occasional symptoms, but i find if i dont eat i feel great. so i thought id post here a and see if anyone is similar to me?

Hi Shane, First off, welcome to the forum. We are extremely helpful (to a fault, at time) and very curious about this condition and the related conditions.
Some of your symptoms sounds familiar, others not so much. Have you tried an elimination diet yet?
I'm also a little concerned about the breath test. If your symptoms are due to HFI, the breath test is very dangerous for someone with HFI--especially if your symptoms are because of HFI as these are rather severe. A breath test will also register positive for HFI or Fructose Malabsorption--which doesn't It's much safer to do a DNA test first to rule out the documented HFI genes first.

Hi Shane,
welcome on board. I absolutely back what Colormist has said re avoiding breath test as first step. If you can get the genetics done first it is safer, especially if you are showing liver sypmtoms. HFI - jaundice and liver symptoms hypoglycemia - foggy head, , diabetes (excessive thirst, craving sweet things - this def not HFI symptom) weight gain Fructose malabsorption - diarrhea, muscle pains, abdominal pain
got a mixed list there, hypoglycemia can go with HFI
Start with least invasive, eg genetics, then build up to more challenging things.

Just a note that I also get really thirsty after accidentally eating something I shouldn't have. Might be something to do with the kidneys needing to do their job and flush the sugar out of the body.

Hi, thanks for the response. i will mention what you have said about the tests to the doctor, i didnt know about a DNA test so thanks for that. I will almost certainly need the biopsy as they want to rule out other things as well. i have tried elimination diets in the past but they never found any one thing and pretty much gave up as they said it looked like various things gave me reactions. Although i do crave sweet things it seems they are the main problem, and ive never really eaten fruit much at all. You are right there seems to be a lot of things going off and i dont wont to become a serial symptom searcher, but at last the doctors seem to be trying to get me sorted.
thanks again shane
