Hello, Has anyone had liquorice root before? I know liquorice confectionary contains sugar but the root itself is a herb? I'm seeing a naturopath because aside from the HFI i am still getting way to sick and they have found a bacterial problem in my digestive system so i'm looking at alternate ways to help this but keeping it hfi safe... cheers

I used to very occasionally chew licorice root as a child..
I cannot remember if it made me ill or not but then I was more often ill than not as a child..
It was just normal to me.
I do remember not being able to eat much of it at a time.. but then it is like chewing a tree root! Mmm perhaps I should re-type that because I think it may be a tree root!
Not something i would recommend doing on a regular basis.. perhaps because it can make you rather too "Regular" if you get my meaning?
Not to mention wearing your teeth out!
It tasted sweet but not as sweet as normal licorice sweets do, if I remember rightly.
Hope this helps?

I was thinking along the lines of herbal tea's etc? Is there any herbs/potions that you guys would suggest that you know are hfi safe?

I drink (sip, really) throat coat tea when I get a sore throat. Ingredients are: Licorice root and dry extract, wild cherry bark, fennel seed, cinnamon bark, orange peel, slippery elm bark, althea root. I don't drink it very often (only when I have a really, really bad sore throat), so I'm not sure how safe it is for people with HFI.

I drink peppermint tea to sooth a grotty belly and guts, it really works a treat. I also drink Earl Grey, Jasmine, Chinese, Fennel, White and Green teas. Tried a lot of fruit flavoured teas.. YUUK! not nice. Home made "rose hip" tea is not bad in very small amounts. (high in vitamin C) I have also had several Chinese "Medicine" teas which while they are VERY bitter and no one would drink them for pleasure (unless they were very strange) I have had no reaction to them and they do work! Although one has to wonder what the hell is in them.. I hear stories of real horrible animal abuse to get ingredients for some of them. Colormist.. I like that one and so far as I have experienced all but the licorice root is safe in the quantities we are likely to drink. I would expect that to be safe as well really. I will look out for it as it might be a better option (particularly if I have to drive) than my usual throat cure.. a gargle with neat scotch whisky! I hurts a lot but next day.. no sore throat! like magic.. occasionally a slightly sore head if I swallow a few times too often though.

To cure a sore throat I gargle with neat scotch whisky.. It stings a bit but has dual effect.. 1/. Cures sore throat with enough applications, although once is usually enough I like to make sure and have several to make sure 2/. After a few.. err med..medicinallll doses.. Err what sore throat .. hic... It works and releave the cold symptoms too which is an added bonus.. well I am not sure if it dose but by then I'm past being bothered by the cold.. I wish I had the excuse more often.. hardly every drink any these days.. Keep smiling summer is nearly here (for you)

I have heard of Bill's sore throat remedy from another (non-associated) party, so it does seem to carry a wee bit of clout. Of course, I've also heard many people recommend dousing their poison ivy rashes with bleach, nail polish remover, and nail polish (all of which do not work). I guess it's worth a try if you have some single-malt scotch or whiskey lying about collecting dust.

If you are not used to drinking scotch whisky neat then I'd water it at least 50/50 otherwise you will sound like Janice Joplin for a day or two
