OK I need to start looking at a low protein low fat, filling FHI safe meals.. Preferable low calorie so I can be full for longer on the 2 days a week I wish to fast for? (low food intake) The only thing I have come up with so far is a home made Pizza with extra Non-digestible fiber in the flour, low fat cheese and mushrooms on it! maybe a few olives and chili's as well I suppose I could get away with.. Perhaps with one or two finely chopped (so not much weight) anchovies spread around? Not very promising.. Puddings are easy.. Rice pudding with low fat milk.. Semolina Custard and Rhubarb all also made with low fat milk.. Tapioca if I can find any these days would be good.. Dumplings made with veg suet, cooked in low fat milk will be filling but low calorie? But low fat = low taste usually.. miss out the butter fat and miss out the flavour. This is going to be difficult.. but perhaps do-able. Looking to have about 600 calories a day for 2 days a week consecutavly.. say Saturday / Sunday with eating normally the rest of the week. Any sugestions anyone?

Have I missed something? Why low protein? Surely with an HFI diet that is almost impossible as you are limited on carbs with fructose / sucrose. One idea is soup............. Homemade of course. Get a friendly butcher or farmer to save you bones and giblets. Slow cook these in water and some herbs for several hours to get all the flavour out of them, then leave them in the stock until cool then remove and pass the liquid through a seive or muslin. You can then use the stock for soups. You can have a thin soup just add pepper, or thicken with cornflour or potato flour. Add some cooked meat and blend it in or finely chop and if you can have them a few cubed potato. You can make a big stock pot when you have time and freeze half of it for another time. Soup is incredibly filling and can be taken to work in a flask. You could always take some pitta bread for extra sustenance and dunk them.................. Really worried about your fasting idea with HFI, the yo-yo affect on the bloodsugar could be catastrophic. You are better to eat safe, sensible little and often. Chew slowly as this makes your body think you have eaten more.............. and alot of self control.......................... is far better than fad fasting diets..

I know maybe not safe but generally my blood sugar level is now very stable, I can even miss a meal occasionally with no harm. I am still trying to find time to speak to my Dr about my IGF! (Insulin like Growth Factor) which if high will mean that at some time I will get cancer.. If I can get it low enough then cancer is almost impossible to get.. IGF1 comes from having a diet high in protein!! Meat is generally 24+% protein. Since my last Dr's appointment I have been trying to get a little weight off and to lower my Blood Lipids which were high.. So been eating more fish.. err. 40% protein!!! Errrmmm.. :~ so now you know why I am keen to know what mine is and to try to figure out a way to keep it low if possible. Also need to work out how many calories a day I will need on the bike ride next year.. maybe 3500 to 4,000 a day I think. Main problem will be how to carry all that food! Eggs on a motorcycle riding Cross country on dirt roads.. I think I would have one huge omelet at longtime day one.. and none there after

I am going to try to cook rice tonight with a little added Phsillium husk fiber to see if it slows down the digestion of the rice sufficently to keep me feeling fuller for longer. Rice is great for fast energy release only probelm is 2 hours later feeling empty again.

Bill, I share your frustration about trying to devise a healthy HFI-safe eating plan. One thought about the bike ride, my favorite hiking snack is a bottle of water and a bag of goldfish crackers (would you say biscuits?) I'd eat a small handful frequently in order to keep blood sugar stable. They don't take up much space and weigh almost nothing. You probably have other brands you like, but of course check ingredients carefully.
Goldfish come in lots of flavors, but the only ones I like are the Parmesan cheese. I don't know if they are available in Britain or Australia, but if not, maybe they could be ordered online. Below is the nutritional information. I don't claim they're healthy in a conventional sense, but they seem to be an HFI-safe, portable, source of calories when needed. (Let's assume the < 1g sugar is lactose in the cheese.)

Thanks they look good to me. I have not come across them in the UK or Australia so I might invest in an online order to try them out. We do have sort of simalar type crackers in the UK some of the tasty'st are rice cakes made out of puffed rice. Unfortunatly All the food I will have on the trip will have to be bought in Australia they do not allow ANY imported foodstuffs unless they are very strigently checked first. Taking food in through the airport risks a fine of over AU$ 20,000!! You even have to prove all your footware is mud free and has not been used in the counrtyside for 3 weeks prior to the flight! They have had horrible problems with intorduced plants and animals.. also bugs like fire ants are taking over and replacing the local less nasty varieties of bugs. The amount of damage being done to the local wildlife by Cane toads is frightening. I am thinking of taking some dry crackers and Vegemite the Australian version of Marmite as a booster. They also have tinned cheese.. no idea what its like but b* auful is what I expect when I try it. I am not too worried I can go the odd day or two on low ish food intake only problem is I will need 100% ability to ride an over loaded dirt bike in sand for 6 to 10 hours a day.. and when my blood sugar is low.. motor reflex is first to go.. well I think mental IQ drops before but then but I how can I tell? Its like visiting Alzheimers when you got it you are too far gone to notice. Well I certianly notice when I have the shakes and can hardly speak.. I am trying to save up for a dirt bike so I can test myself out on some sand riding in the UK and see how I do. I need a blood sugar tester to go with me to see whats happening.

Spoke to my Doctor about my IGF levels and was told they do not check that and it is a research type test so very expensive..
Mmmm.
If the blood IGF level is directly linked to the chance of getting cancer then surely it is a test that should be available to everyone and be done as standard??
Maybe a new test and it will just take some time for it to become more readily available.
