OK so some time ago I was arguing about the unhealthy nature of a sugar rich diet..
I thought that research would start coming out soon about the decrease in overall health by eating the very high sugar diet most people are on.
Also about how the human body has not evolved yet to eat pure sugars and without a large amount of fiber in the food to slow down the adsorbing "hit" of sugars, causing damage to organs.
Historically large amounts of sugar were only available in the Autumn months. when putting on additional fat is a really good idea, genetically.
The human race (the part who get enough to eat that is) are running our bodies on too higher octane fuel ( please excuse a petrol head metaphor) which is also by coincidence highly addictive!
All this was from what I had read about sugar metabolism and in particular the implications from Dr Lustig's research into obesity and the link between Fat , Fiber and Fructose containing drinks.
This week on the BBC channel 2 a program series called "HORIZON" which is an investigative series which has been running for many many years now.
This specific program is about the aging process and how our diet can effect how quickly we age.
All of the program was very interesting, however towards the end it got very interesting indeed!
Research being done by a Professor Mark Mattson in Baltimore amongst many others, in mice ( but about to start Human trials) indicates that on a restricted calorie diet, mice live 30% longer..
OK this is indicated by statistics from the Great Depression in the USA and the UK during the Second World War (WWII) when our diet was very highly controlled by Ration cards.. and sugar was in very short supply and most of the population in the UK was on the edge of starvation for 3 or 4 years, yet we lived longer!
Children brought up in those difficult times on restricted diets have proved to be generally more healthy throughout life than those born both before and after.
We would have suffered starvation as well except for the food aid sent to us at great cost, mainly due to Germain submarines, from the USA. Thanking our American Cousins for that by the way
In trials with mice who are predisposed to getting Alzheimer's (genetically modified) feeding them Fructose in their drinking water brings on the start of Alzheimer's 3 to 4 months earlier.. in human terms 10 to 15 years earlier than someone not drinking Fructose containing drinks.
A high fat / calorie diet alone will not do this.
It is an aside to the main thrust of the program but equally as important.. why live longer if we cannot remember who we are?
The program's conclusion is that if we go on a Fasting / Eating normally diet, 2 days in 7 restricting diet to 600 calories per day 5 days eating anything and as much as you want.
1/. We should live for about 20 to 30 years longer and be fitter and healthier.
and
2/. If we avoid Fructose we will have little to no chance of getting Alzheimer's..
Sounds good to me!
Unfortunately almost all this research is being done in the USA so not many chances to speak to the researchers easily.
Now only problem is fasting.. how to avoid my blood glucose dropping below 5?
Time to chat to my poor Doctor again.. and ask her a lot more questions she has either no answers to or has to think very hard before answering..
BBC Horizon program made by Mr Michael Mosley. first broadcast BBC 2 9.00 PM Monday 6th August 2012.

OK I'm getting the drinks in, who wants a full fat coke?
PS if you hold shares in Sugar refiners / Coke or Pepsi holding companies you might want to reconsider your long term position!
Likewise if you insure said companies.. beware of Asbestosis type legal claims, if you think they are bad you ain't seen nothing yet!
