I bought a new smart phone a few months back. It's a Windows Nokia Lumia. There aren't a whole heckuva lot of apps available for it, but I did discover the Translator app.
Basically you open the app, point it at something in another language, and the app instantly translates to English (or whatever language you pick as your native tongue).
You point your camera at one of these languages: Chinese (simplified), English, French, German, Italian, Spanish
And it can translate it into one of these languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional), Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese
It doesn't look like the "point at" languages are quite as diverse and the "translated into" languages.
However, this is one of the primary reasons I don't travel outside of English-speaking countries. It's hard enough remembering that sugar list in English.

That looks like a really worthwhile app to have if you do alot of travelling. I am thinking of crawling into the world of modern technology and may get a nokia, or maybe a samsung, apparently the iphone4 isn't all its cracked up to be..... Another one to add to your list if you can get it is an intolerances app, this lists fructose as one of the intolerances it lists................ itunes.apple.com/us/app/food-intolerances-histamine/id419098758?mt=8

That's a pretty cool app, Charlie. I used to have an iphone. Maybe I'll have my mom download it. I doubt if it's perfect, but it's a pretty damned good start.
