Hello to all I want to tell all of you what I have been going through lately with my 8 month old Carlos. (who has HFI) I introduce him to home made white rice puree, and he vomitted it and cried (A LOT) while I was trying to feed it to him. I thought it was completely safe for him to have it. Than I tried oatmeal cereal (which said it has NO sugar) HE hated it, he was nauseous, so I stopped. My expert friends from this board ;D have recommended me to give him chicken (which he takes fine) and that is what I am giving him. However, I am really concern ,because what if carlos cant tolerate rice, oatmeal ( which I understand are safe), what carbs is he going to have (in the future)? How much is true, of the tolerance levels, are there people that have Zero tolerance? Is anyone in this board unable to take rice, oatmeal?? Thank you, just looking for some perspective Claudia

Hi Claudia, several things here. I have read back all your posts and you say your son was diagnosed HFI but not how, was it just due to liver problems or was it a specific HFI test? Therefore are we dealing with absolute HFI or just maybe? If maybe, or even as an add on he may have a starch tolerance problem too, maybe lacking a different enzyme as well or instead of called sucrase-isomaltase where they cannot break down sucrose (and therefore most fruits and veg are out too) but also starches which the rice problem may be indicative of. look up www.csidinfo.com for more info on that just incase. Otherwise oatmeal - may be higher in fructose but white rice should be ok unless it is the wrong sort of rice. Don't use any processed, microwavable ones, they have all sorts added, the best is plain basmati rice as far as I find. But maybe introduce in the tinsiest amounts for a while to build it up. One famous microwave brand in this country adds orange juice to their rice I discovered after Meg had it at a friends house. Otherwise for now, keep building up the meats and fish list first, let his system learn to cope on that then try carbs again.

thank you for answering charlie Carlos was had liver enlargement and they ran all sort of tests including HFI. The genetics test came out positive, they found both mutations. I dont think he has anymore enzyme missing cuz they ran a lotttt of test and that was they only thing that came out positive.

When you say he vomited, what exactly do you mean? Many babies age 8 months old spit up while eating. Also, I am not sure how you determine that an 8 month old baby is nauseous (assuming he doesn't vomit) re the oatmeal cereal. A parent of another infant here wrote a recent thread about vomiting where the outcome was intussiseption (sorry, I can't spell at this time of night) and it seems unlikely that's what your child has but I think the general point is that rather than assuming this is related to HFI (which seems unlikely since most of us can tolerate rice at least) that maybe you should go back to your doctor and consider other possibilities. A lot of different things besides HFI can cause vomiting in children, from stomach viruses to food allergies.

OK This is an easy one to sort out. Try this. First of all pan fry the chicken to colour it and give it some taste. Then add water herbs a little salt and maybe some mushrooms and cook till tender. Remove the chicken and thicken the stock with rice flour, cook the rice flour in for about 5 min stir all the time add water if it gets too thick, add back the shredded chicken and mushrooms and blend to consistency he wants. Also use some thickened stock by its self in a thick soup type consistency. Plain rice by its self (without loads of butter and cream ) will taste very bland and not to his pallet which is used to the very sweet mothers milk / formula. He will then get the required amount of carbs in his diet Keep smiling PS try him on some cheesy pasta as well. Boil pasta in salted water until just slightly over cooked, drain and rinse in cold water. Make some cheese sauce (full fat milk and grated cheese thicken with potato starch or rice flour, a little salt and pepper to taste) Add pasta and blend to consistency you want for him.. He may well refuse it a few times but then start to eat it as he gets used to the taste.. It will help if he sees you enjoying eating it as well. How many children's prepared foods can you "enjoy" eating? Not many if they come ready prepared in little jars that's for sure!
