Hi Everyone, My daughter can only tolerate, potatoes, spinach and cauliflower. She wont eat broccoli, asparagus, lettuce, celery etc. She definitely can't eat corn or carrots. She stopped eating spinach which she ate three times a week until a few weeks ago. Because she is mainly eating starch and meat, she is always constipated. Does anyone know if there is any fiber on the market that is safe for HFI? Metamucil has inulin which is made of fructans. Before knowing this, I gave her a sugar-free version of it and she had a really bad tummy ache afterwards.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Hi Sara,
We use Miralax on a regular basis, per our GI doctor. Keeps Luke very regular and has no ill side effects.

Thanks Amy. I'm glad to hear miralax is safe. I was worried her bowels would get used to it if she used it alot but it sounds like it is ok from your son's experience with it.

Sara, miralax rings alarm bells in my head for some reason, can't think why just at the moment, sure someone posted some concern about it but the chemical name polyethylene glycol - with the -ol bit at the end signifying possibly a sugar alcohol - may be a clue. To be honest you may find things settle down as her digestive system settles and you don't need anything, but I know everyones experiences are different. But maybe, unless obviously really severe constipation maybe see how the diet change helps first. Sometimes when you put too much into the mix early on things get more confusing.

The Miralax is perfectly safe, and Luke has been on it for ages with no ill effects. He is confirmed HFI and highly sensitive, so I am certain it is safe. My GI doctor, who is knowledgeable about HFI, said that it is our best bet at keeping him regular. She says the Miralax is not absorbed or digested, but prevents the intestines from absorbing so much liquid, allowing enough fluid to stay in the bowel to help move things along. Luke backs up badly, and the poop is like cement- 4 or 5 flushes sometrimes just to get it to budge!!!! Sorry to be graphic.

I stopped posting about fiber.. I was getting jokes made about me constantly banging on about it.. My Medical professional put me onto a for of this stuff. Psyllium Husk Husks, Ispaghula. Of which I have 2 teaspoons full in my breakfast cereal. It is non-digestible plant fiber.. the NON part is very important for us with HFI and as lo FM people as well. Digestible Fiber breaks down in the intestines to sucrose.. yes sugar! So Hi fiber meals are really bad for us.. hence the normally low fiber diet and the desperate need for a replacement! I buy the stuff off eBay and it costs about £10 per Kilo (2.4lbs) so it is nice and cheap and last about 10 months a kilo for me. It is important to only have this stuff with plenty of fluids. It can be cooked with as well but again I would only add very small amounts to say flour in baking and allow it to soak up the water for at least 10 min before cooking. It is sold in two forms.. the whole husks and a fine ground powder. The powder is really hard to use and I did not feel so good on it. I suspect the grinding somehow damages the protective nature of the stuff and allows more to be digested by the gut acids and enzymes. It takes a day or two to start working properly but I really miss it. If for some reason I miss a day the next week is a problem.. until things settle down again. It is for sale in just about every health food shop in Australia but is far less common in the UK although eBay have plenty of it available Enjoy a happier life and smoother one also with Psyllium Husk Husks Powder Ispaghula Detox Diet 1Kg Only £9.99 eBay item number 251079602305 Many other suppliers are available and I do not recommend or endorse any in particular..
