Tammy- I was wondering if the sugar -free candy made by Gertrude Hawke is oky ? It has Mannitol as a sweetner. I thought this was bad for HFI, but I just wanted the check. What is the sweetner they use in the candy at Purity Candy. Bailey is doing so well reight now, but we have to go to CHOP right after Easter, so I don't want him to be sick, or lose weight. I also would like him to have fun during a holiday, like everyone else. Jen F>

I allow both mannitol and maltitiol. When we started this diet 20 yrs ago, I was told only to stay away from fructose, sucrose, levulose, and sorbitol as sweetners. All other non-calorie sweetners were fine. So that is what we have always done, and have never had a problem until we tried the new Splenda (sucralose) a few years ago. Now with all the info available on the internet, some question the safety of some of the sugar alcohols. Since I live by my old tried and true lists, I still allow them all.
Ask your dietician what they think. (Mine said then and still says now that it is fine) That is still the best end opinion.
As far as which one is in Purity candy, I don't remember since I use both. If you call them, I'll sure they'll tell you. Or I'll soon be making a trip there to get some, so I'll know which one it is then.
I'm sorry to say that this is probably going to be a question you'll have to make your own decision on. You never want your child to be sick, but is it worth it if it turns out to be fine.
