Does HFI cause intestinal inflammation? Is it possible to have the sensitivity so badly that it causes bloating...and even possible obstruction in the small bowel? I am just curious if anyone else out there has had problems of this type.

Technically HFI shouldn't cause problems in the bowel as it is more a problem at the liver part of the fructose metabolism. the bowel issue is more linked to FM where the fructose cannot be carried through the villi in the small intestines and then pulls water into the bowel and sits fermenting which causes the gas and bloating.
However there is a possibility that everyone has a small element of both going on, especially if you are very reactive to any fructose.
Meg gets very bloated and farts for England when she has fructose, since starting the low fodmap diet the gas has got alot worse to the extent that if you look on a weather map and see a dark cloud over south-east England then that is Megan!!!! Sorry megs, glad you don't read this!!!!!!!

I appreciate the info. There's no doubt about the fructose intolerance -- but we're also looking at inflammatory bowel disease [Crohn's] as an added possibility. As the saying goes, " a patient can have as many diseases as he/she pleases." Anyway, I am controlling my "digestive disorder" pretty well with a sugar free + dairy free + gluten free diet.

Yes it is a problem for those of us with HFI.. Sorry to contradict Charlie.. but digestible fibre breaks down in the gut to produce sucrose which then as with FM people inflaming the gut and causes gas bloating and the back yard gallop.. ( an old saying for when the toilets were down the garden ) etc.. Also some foods slowly break down slowly releasing Sucrose and Fructose as it passes down the gut. This will also cause us problems.
