Next month I will be travelling to the UK (England, London area mostly). What should I eat when eating out? And what should I buy to take home with me? I would love some tips from the experts here! I will be visiting Tesco's, so anything from them should be available to me. I can't wait to see the supermarkets, my sister told me there is much more gluten-free etc. food available in the UK and I already checked the website from Tesco's and is amazing what they sell! Thanks in advance!

Ummm, well first you must have some proper fish and chips or at least the chips from a chippy. If you can't have the batter as I suspect you won't with your list alot of the best ones will fry you plain fish if you ask.
Tesco - their gluten free unsliced bread is good, as is Genius make but they do add sugar to all their bread, ok for malabsorption supposedly but not HFI. They do alot of pasta too but watch the rice one as it is made of brown rice. Also alot are made of corn and I'm not sure quite how high in fructose they are.
They sell Lactaid milk which is normal milk treated with lactase, that is very drinkable. The rice milk is a bit odd.....
All the doves farm flours are gluten free and ideal for cooking with, they do plain, self raising and bread flour. Depending on your sugar tolerance be careful as most free from range does seem to have sugar added.
Let me know dates when you are over, we are only 50 mins by train from London and got school holidays coming up so if you fancy meeting up let me know by PM or via my email.
Gluten free sausages from a proper butcher are good, they have no sugar added and you can check ingredients as they make them on the premises.
As for eating out, I'll get back to you on that idea, we do struggle alot finding somewhere I must be honest as alot of food is ready made and reheated so you do have to watch it.

Hi. My name is Bianca and I am writing from Italy. My sons are HFI affected and are on free fructose diet since 1998. We've already been to England in 2006, all together, and since I was there I could quite easily cope with the diet. Now, my eldest one, aged 15, is leaving for England (Ellesmere) in July for a couple of weeks. He's staying in a college with other Italian students, and he will have an assistant with him, that should ensure he is having the right food and treatment everyday. I am going to translate into English the list of permitted and/or to be avoided foods, but I am aware that giving the assistant the names of the permitted ones (I mean, for example fish fingers, which ones?) would make her/his job easier for her/him and safer for my son... Would you be able to suggest what to buy and where? Andrea (my son) is only fructose intolerant and not also celiac, so it might be easier to cope with... I'm looking forward your answers... Thanks in advance Bianca P.S.:I am the Vice President of AIF ONLUS - which is the Italian Association of people affected by HFI. We have a website address: www.aifrut.it and you can contact us at our email address whenever you need any information about dealing with the diet in Italy.

Bancia, I live not 45 min from Ellesmere, So if there are any problems please give my numbers and contact details to his assistant and to him.. if he is carrying my numbers then in an emergency I can be of instant help.. Unfortunately my Italian is non- existent so I will be of no use as an interpreter. What dates is he over and where is he staying.. I would be interested in meeting him and I could take him out for a meal (and his assistant) if you would like? Perhaps it would be good for him to meet an adult (even and old one like me) with HFI so he can understand better that the condition is not life restricting so long as the diet is a healthy one (for an HFI'r) I am unable to PM you with my contact details so if you email me on info@fructose-intolerance.org I will reply with them So far as I know all fish fingers for sale in the UK seem to be safe to me. In this I am meaning plain fish and crumb not any fancy "flavoured" ones which are now starting to appear in the supermarkets. Keep smiling he will be safe and HFI happy

Hi Eithan and Welcome to the forum.
I presume you are HFI? or FM? there is a difference to what you can and cannot eat and drink in the UK (and everywhere)
Plenty of spring water is safe but not any "Flavoured" types.
Milk is safe but avoid "fake milk" made from Coocnut, Rice, Soya or Oats all contain Fructose, or are just butt nasty.
Plenty of Indian takaway food places where I am certian you will find both people who speak your lanuage (whichever it is which is your native tounge) and food you are familuare with.
Avoid Mac Donalds of course nothing worht eating there anyway.
KFC is safe if you stick to Variety meal and the original 2 or 3 peice Cornels meal.
Plenty of other eating places where food is good and safe for HFI. stick to Steaks, Chips, (frys) Gammon and Egg has always been safe for me.
Avoid all pies and pastry foods, most bread is safe.
I hope this helps?

You might well be right but I was giving "him"? Eithan the benefit of the doubt. Seem to have a vast amount of spam on the site today from a Japanese type seller.. like we can read japanese?? They seem to be selling everything from handbags.. (now calm down girls) to HID headlights.. (yes I checked the prices of the HID lights and they are expensive compared to what we can get here. So I'm calm too )
