Does anyone here gets ill from going to the dentist? I get pretty dizzy from the anesthesia. Today she just removed plaque and polished my tooth with a sweet tasting polisher. I didn't think about it while it happened, but afterwards I got nauseous, so I was thinking. Maybe there was sorbitol in it or something. Do any of you recognize this, or am I just going nuts thinking in fructose/nonfructose terms everywhere?

I do NOT swallow anything at the dentist. They have to use that rinse/suction thing on me every 30 seconds. Sometimes they ask me what flavor I want--not that it matters. I'm sure they all have sorbitol in them. The dentist also tried to get me to use mouthwash. I said I really can't find one without sweetener, so I can't use it.

Regina's dentist uses a plain pumace mixed with water for polishing. Tastes terrible, but I'm sure she swallows some of it. She's never had a problem with that.
She has had a problem with the novacaine though. She has never had a cavity, but one time she fell and broke 4 of her teeth off. Took several trips to the dentist, and even a couple of years later had to have a root canal on another one. The only thing in common with the trips when she got sick after was the novacaine. Her dentist checked everything she could find, could not find any ingredients that were questionable but it's the only thing we could put together.

colormist yes, that must have been my problem yesterday, I did swallow it. I thought 'that tastes yummie', and forgot to think about sorbitol. Lesson learned for next time Tammy, what kind of problems does Regina get with the novacaine? I kind of feel hypoglycemic, like fainting, not quite present for a few hours and usually get a headache after that.

Regina gets ill in the same fashion that eating sugar affects her. 2 or 3 days later she starts with diarrhea, vomiting, and a massive headache. This has always been her reaction. Since it's always a couple of days later, it makes it hard to track down.

Some IV meds like Morphine are "buffered" with Sorbitol. What's the betting the Novocaine was too? Also when you suck a sweet about 25% of the sugars are adsorbed through the the lining of the mouth & throat before it even gets near the stomach.. so that might be the route the Sorbitol is taking, if it is Sorbitol that's causing the problem. Colormist .. a single malt whisky or a good clean sugar free vodka will work really well as a mouth wash.. and has the advantage of being swallow able to get at the germs from the inside as well .. only not before driving the car OK?
