I have HFI and have been on a extremely low carb diet called the ketogenic diet for almost a year. I did this because of studies that showed plenty of evidence that this diet repairs fatty livers and damaged livers and other organs...it is working on those fronts, but other strange things are also happening.
Just wondering if anyone else with HFI tried any of the low carb diets , and how it effected them.
I'm suspecting these diets effect us differently in some ways then normal people on the diets and I'm very curious.

I am not officially diagnosed with HFI. But, I have done a very low carb diet (out of necessity, since I was having problems with so many foods). It worked well in terms of digestion for me. I was basically just having meat and eggs. But, there were some pitfalls and I had to quit it. A big one is that I was losing a lot of weight (not good in my case). And it was extremely expensive too.
I still maintain a fairly low carb intake, at just 100-120g per day. That works better for me, to maintain my weight and keep costs down.

I went on the Adkins diet (before I knew I had HFI) and lost a lot of weight (which was nice), but eventually I started to feel ill (due to whole grains and fructose-y meats) and went back on carbs. The bad result was I gained all the weight I lost and plus five pounds. In the end, it wasn't worth it. I'm not sure if I'd have the same results nowadays, but I really don't think I could survive without milk, pasta, and rice.

I looked into the ketogenic diet for megs when they first mentioned epilepsy as it is used alot for that. Some of it is very similar to the HFI restrictions but not really ideal with so many diet restrictions anyway, the body needs the carbs for the energy levels.

Adrian-
What other things are happening to you that you are concerned about?
I am not confirmed HFI, but am definitely fructose sensitive. I have tried very low carb several times in the past and get very severe orthostatic hypotension and tachycardia (low blood pressure and rapid heart rate upon standing upright) and I also get very depressed. I have come to the conclusion that i need a certain amount of carbs to maintain proper blood volume and to get tryptophan across the blood-brain barrier.
