I had read somewhere that Sorbitol breaks down into sucrose in the intestines.. Edit Think I have been getting confused by digestible fibre. end of edit Last week I met a biochemist (He is a professor and a big wig in the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology) www.eva.mpg.de/He said Sorbitol is made from Fructose and breaks down into Fructose-1-phosphate I think he said, I was driving a the time and could not write down what he was saying. He was absolutely positive it is made from Fructose! So it is as bad to us (with HFI) as the equivalent weight of pure Fructose! In some countries it is still used to "buffer" morphine and other IV fluids! In Europe I know Germany and Belgium still use it I am not sure about other countries.. I am considering getting a tattoo done on my arms near where they would put an IV drip. I am thinking of something like :- Hereditary Fructose intolerant Fructose aldolase B-deficiency Fructose 1, 6 bisphosphate aldolase deficiency
Sucrose X Fructose X Sorbitol X I will have a skull and x bones instead of the X Anybody got a better idea? I have a medical alert tag already but feel the need a backup. I will knock up a template on a word processor and show it to a few nurses and Doctors to get their opinion. Will this work in Germany, Belgium or Russia and the far East like in the Philippines ?

I have been in the hospital for surgery and they gave me a glucose IV and I did okay. I do not notice anything bad.
I carry medical alert papers in my handbag as well as wear a bracelet. On the papers, I try and make it simple by stating:
"Hereditary Fructose Intolerant " "Glucose only"
In the case of an emergency, would the above statements make sense to EMS ?

That's my point. It might be worth taking your papers to an Emergency Medical department and ask them that's what I intend doing.

Yes, I have read that sorbitol breaks down into fructose, its a no in HFI and FM diets.
As for the tattoo, just make sure the artist isn't dyslexic!!!! Could end up painful and wrong. also, where would you put it that has enough space - no don't answer that one!!!!!
The problem is they can put drips in the front of the elbow in either arm or on the back of the hand, but also if nec in the foot, so not sure having it in one place would be any good. Didn't you say you had the tag that gets plugged into a computer, would it not come up then in the ED ? Personally I think tattooing is a bit over the top - just get a devil like everyone else if you want one!!!!

Oh yes? Charlie , you have not mentioned that before .. just where have you got your Devil tattooed then? Where is the big problem I was thinking in the crook of both arms but not sure how small the writing can be and remain legible for a tattoo? As to other places.. I would have to find a really good looking and persuasive lady tattoo artist if it going anywhere near where you are alluding to.. otherwise there would be room only for HFI! Those things hurt!

I pulled out my sunscreen today and read the ingredients. I vaguely remembered something: SORBITOL. I remembered correctly.
This is a Baby sunscreen SPF 50.
This just goes to show that we must read EVERYTHING !
I know we can absorb ingredients through the skin. The amount surely is not much. But.....is it a problem?

It's never been a problem for Regina. I can even use Fructose Shampoo on her. (Although I usually don't as I just can't bring myself to very often) I don't even check her lotions. No rashes, nothing.

I too have used Fructose type shampoo. I am not sure if it actually contains added fructose or its a marketing ploy as they say it contains Fruit (it smells like bananas) I think there is a tiny about of Banana in it possibly processed banana skins as they don't like to waste anything in the food processing industry and waste products cost money disposing of them.. so why not stuff it in something else and claim a health benefit?? All I can report is my scalp feels very cool while using it.. so I suspect there might be some in it as I get a cold sensation on my tongue if I taste pure fructose.. however this could more likely be something else in the formulation or purely Psychosomatic, all in my mind, what there is of it.
