Hi Everyone, My name is April. I am mom to three great kids 15,16, and 11. I married to great computer nerd. I am DFI and trying to learn to cope with it. For years I was lactose intolerant. Now I am can no longer tolerate wheat and high sugar/fructose in foods. I keep thinking what's next! I have the basic diet down but I am also a confirmed sweet tooth. So I will need support to give up my sugary ways. My kids are fine as far as sugar/fructose but my youngest has Autistic Spectrum Disorder and an egg allergy. At one time he was also allergic to milk but thank goodness he can tolerate dairy now. He is showing signs of hypoglycemia so I have to watch his sugar intake as well. I have been hanging out for a while and feel like this would be a great place for support and info. April

Welcome April!
I hope you can find lots of useful information here. Are you following a DFI diet, or are you trying to eliminate all fructose from your diet?
Glad you found us - it's nice to see new faces.

I am following the stricter HFI diet right now until everything heals in my gut. I cheated over the holidays and I have really paid the price for it! Usually I feel better after about a month. Then I start missing certain things and cheat! I really want to follow the HFI minus the gluten in wheat. But this is hard because it really limits me to white rice. I am confused about corn. It seems that corn flour and corn chips are okay? But not corn? All of the websites say different things about what is okay on the diet and what is not. My diet sheet does not list corn. (sigh) Thank you Fred for the links. I am looking them up now. April

Hi April, Welcome! I hope you can find some help here. I feel for you in that you like a sweet taste, I always have disliked anything sweet so it has not been hard to choose the safe foods but sometimes there are no safe foods to choose from. About corn, I have never found any canned or frozen corn without a sweet taste. Sometimes I can get "field corn " that farmers grow for cattle feed or now maybe alcohol or even High fructose corn syrup that is not sweet, My daughter-in-law's Father grows some for me every year. I make creamed corn and freeze for the year. I don't have problems with corn meal and can eat corn chips that don't have some sort of sugar listed in the ingredients, eg. Fritoes. Jane

Hi April, Things have been a little slow on here lately, I think everyone's just been busy with the Christmas season. Now that's its over, maybe we'll have more time.
As for corn, I have always been told that it's the "germ" of the corn that is bad. So corn itself is out, but corn by-products, corn flour, corn meal, corn oil, etc is fine. Even corn syrup is ok if you can find it pure and not fructose added.
Hope to hear from you alot. Tammy

Thank you all for the welcome! I am going to share something that has sort of worked for me in the past when I have gotten really sick. I do something called the Specific Carbohydrate diet. www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/index.htmBasically I am just eating the soup that the author recommends (now minus the carrots and onions. ) After a about three days I should feel better. Then I will add into my diet cooked veggies one at a time to see if I can tolerate them. Then I will move on to other foods hopefully rice. It is slow and tedious process. But I have been sick to my stomach all month long. I just recently found out about my fructose intolerance so now I know what I need to add back in and what not to add as far as fruits and veggies. This might help those of you who really struggle to figure out what is making you sick. I never fully benefited from this diet because it does include fruits/fructose. I am giving it one more try. I really would like to be able to go somewhere that does not require sudden access to a bathroom! April

Hi April! Good luck weaning yourself off of sugar. My husband (who can eat any and all types of sweets) recently refused donuts because he said they were too sweet. He always loved sugar, but since I do most of the cooking and most of my cooking is sugar-free, he's now accustomed to eating foods without sweeteners added. In short, there's hope if you keep it up! Eventually you won't have such cravings, and if you do there's always sugar-free puddings and dextrose sweeteners that you can use. Just stay away from that bad stuff and keep up the good work! *Laura
