I was wondering if garlic powder is tolerated. we are looking for something to add flavor, and other than salt and pepper are not sure what we can add. I also noticed that some people seem to be able to eat deli meat. Even if we find some without sugar, I thought most deli meats have onion and garlic added as flavorings, would that be safe to eat? We are trying so hard to find foods our little girl can eat as she has been having a really hard time with this new diet and has lost weight.

Hi Jennifer,
on both HFI and FM diets garlic isn't great, especially in a child. Have you tried herbs at all, a pinch of those may do the trick, they have fructose in but you would have to use pretty large amounts to be too much.
Is it you, or your daughter who has the issue with plain food? I used to go through all sort of depressions that Megs food was boring and plain, but actually she didn't mind, once she got to choose things she liked. It was me had the problem that it was boring and repetitive and that is just because we are so used now to thinking food should be varied and bright and strongly tasting.
Its just a case of rethinking how we eat.

Thanks Charlie. My daughter has been refusing a lot of the things we are trying for her and I was thinking it may be for lack of flavor. We have finally gotten her to add a little bit of protein and I was trying to make things a little tastier so she may like them more. Hopefully it is just a matter of getting used to the change.

There are HFI safe versions of both Garlic and Chilli if you want to spice up and add some flavour to her food!
Get some good olive oil and a head of garlic.
In a clean washed and sterilised jam jar (put it in the oven and heat slowly to over 100 Degrees C, or boiling point and let it cool in the oven )
Peal the garlic cloves and pack the cooled jam jar with them fill with olive oil and put on the tightly fitting lid.
Make sure all the cloves are covered and no air is left around the cloves.
Leave for a couple of weeks and then use the oil instead of the garlic.. all the fructose (there really is very little ) is left in the cloves but the flavour which is an oil will spread into the olive oil and make that taste fantastic!
The same can be done with chilli peppers and fried onion!
if using chilli peppers it might be best for keeping to use whole dried chilli peppers instead of fresh ones.
To keep the oil put it in the refrigerator (Olive oil will go solid in the fridge.)
I cut a garlic clove into slices and rub them over my steak before frying.. fantastic!

Thanks So much Bill, I will for sure try this. My daughter has lost a few pounds because she is uninterested in eating much since the change in her food and the dietician is worried so maybe this will help add some flavor and she will like her food more. People have also told me that she seems depressed which is not like her at all so anything I can do will help. Also I noticed that some people say mustard is fine. I thought the mustard I saw listed paprika, would that spice be ok?

Regina does fine on Paprika. The old standard I can remember by is: She can have all spices except allspice. This works well for her.

Do you think your daughter's body is reacting to the diet change as it can be quite a drastic change, especially if done overnight, it may be resting itself to heal damage from the fructose it has been fighting off. What does your daughter want to eat, if it is HFI safe then stick with that and gradually build it up.

Yellow Mustard flour which is used to make English Mustard is a strange one.. I can tolerate standard mustard flour mixed with cold water to make English Mustard (WARNING THIS IS NOT like American Mustard!) it is far hotter and fiery. However if I use any in cooking the food all tastes very sweet and inedible to me. I can recommend Celery seed in very small amounts is great and adds a good safe Celery flavour to any meal that is being cooked. Celery sticks are fine uncooked but go very sweet when cooked. Celery seed doesn't do this
