Found this article attached to a yahoo news item about the sugar content of breakfast cereals. Sugar, and in particular fructose, affects metabolism. Unlike glucose, fructose can only be metabolised in the liver. Some of its effects on the human body include increasing levels of uric acid, which raise blood pressure; increased fat deposition in the liver; and interference with the insulin receptor in the liver. This inhibits ability of the brain to detect the hormone leptin, which regulates appetite. So beyond the empty calories that fructose provides, eating it makes you want to eat more. That explains the voracious appetite after accidentally eating fructose even though I know I'm full.

You really should watch Sugar: The Bitter Truth, a lecture by Dr. Robert Lustig that I posted in the "links" section. You can also find it directly on YouTube. It is 1.5 hours, so be prepared to sit back and relax. Lustig is at UC San Francisco only 2 hours from me in Pediatrics/Endocrinology. He explains why fructose is a poison for everyone, not just people with HFI. You will never look at fructose the same way again.
I also highly recommend Dr. Richard Johnson's book The Sugar Fix which explains all the problems caused by eating too much fructose.

I'm glad this video of Dr Lustigs is getting more "air time" It is not easy to follow all his metabolism tracking but the conclusions are really interesting and confirm what a lot of Health professionals (particularly in Diabetes care sector) had felt about Sucrose in general and Fructose in particular for some time. It also explains why the sudden massive obesity problem that is gripping the western world (or at least the part of the world that follows the western diet). I realised recently al the families that I knew as a child where the children used to come begging for food, because their parents either spent all their money on drinking, smoking and gambling and did not cook, are now the same families who are all obese. This is because within these families they still don't cook.. all the food comes from takeways or these days deliveries. It used to be fish and chip shops that provided the staple diet for them.. precious little sugar in a UK based fish and chip supper.. But now with curries (many are very sweet) Chinese sweet and sour meals not to mention pizza (sweetened tomato base) they are all HUGE! Not to mention the prevalence now for extremely sweet alcoholic drinks. (SHOTS they call them). I think we need to bring back domestic science into our schools urgently! Although who would be in charge of the information given on diet?? most likely the same people who are totally blinkered and will advise a parent with an HFI child to feed them bananas! DOH!
