Wondering if hyperactivity and dark under eye circles, followed by foul mood in a few hours after ingesting fructose-containing foods sound like HFI symptoms in a 9-year-old. Hyperactivity and eye circles are immediate reaction. The bad mood comes later in the day. My daughter had not been diagnosed yet, but I have a fructose malabsorption (possibly HFI, because I get hypoglycemia). Please share your experiences. Thank you!!

Yes, dark circles can be a sign of reaction. My daughter is 9 and has "ADHD" episodes when she has fructose or too much glucose. She had a dodgy pudding today and the mood and behaviour has deteriorated as the evening has gone on and clear dark circles developing under her eyes. I know now when she is reacting, she gets moody, hyper and shouty. Then weepy and feels sick later., definate hypo symptoms from what I have found out recently. If I load her up with milk it improves things.

***always consult your own doctor*** (I am writing due to having to take Therapeutic Nutrition in grad school; and doing my own research for my own health)
In childhood and young adulthood, I have suffered from extreme nutritional deficiencies...primarily around the lack of iron, B12, vitamin C and K. These nutrients work together in many ways to prevent scurvy, anemia, and keeping the vein walls healthy.
While I still bruise easily ...I bruised even more easily in the past before starting a regular regime of vitamins. Also I was a bleeder because my blood did not coagulate well. Once again, that is related to my lack of vitamins. A year ago I had a lymph node remove. No problem with bleeding. My blood coagulated well.
What I understand, dark eye circles can be related to allergies. Also, the tissue around the eyes are very delicate. The tissue bruises easily. I accidentally bump my glasses on something, which in turn, puts pressure on the bridge of my nose, AND GUESS WHAT? I can get a darkness under my eyes. Black eyes ! My nose gets bumped and again, raccoon eyes.
Anemia is/was a big big problem. While I my eat enough meat or beef to get iron and B12, they cannot absorb or be used by the body if there is no C in the stomach at the same time we eat the iron and b12. I would get bad headaches. Pounding headaches. I learned that the heart will pump harder trying to push more blood through the body, trying to compensate for the lack of oxygen. Iron helps the blood carry oxygen to the cells. Not enough Iron equals not enough oxygen to the body.
In the past, doctors have put my on plain Iron pills. None of them worked at all. Finally my current PCP put me on Chromegen. It has multiple nutrients ensuring the absorption of Iron. No head aches, I am strong and can be active. I used to be so weak, I would have to stay on the couch most of the time. However, doctors fear that males will get too much Iron, and it is possible.
Right now I am taking doctor prescribed Prenatal vitamins called Duet DHA Balanced. No fructose in these that I know of. Furthermore, I usually make it a point to take phytonutrients from vegetable and fruits. Again, as far as I know, no fructose, just phytonutrients.
I do read labels and refuse some vitamins if there is something questionable. I try to make sure they are natural vitamins and a well known established brand. A well balanced multiple vitamin is better than taking one or two select vitamins or minerals. I understand that taking a single "B" vitamin can give you a deficiency in the other B vitamins, therefore, a "B complex" is suggested.
See if sour lemon can be tolerated. A natural source of C. There are "sweet" lemons and I can not tolerate them. (Non HFI'ers would still think they are sour.) I sip on cold lemon water daily as a way to get C and stay hydrated. My high blood nitrogen levels are related to dehydration. As always read labels. Do your research. Good Luck, Susan

I am not officially diagnosed yet (genetic test pending), but I am definitely fructose sensitive.
I had dark circles under my eyes almost all the time as a child, and my mother always said I was a VERY moody child.
