I am curious ;D
I just read another thread in which several members said they were car sick as children. I was very car sick all through my childhood and my mother just started to give me dramamine as a regular thing if we had to drive any distance at all. Was this the case for anyone else on this forum?

I never got car sick as a kid from the actual motion of the car but boy did I have episodes after we would stop at restauruants of I ate something that my system didn't like. As an adult if I get sick around my parents they still joke with me about "I'm gonna frow up" as this is what I used to always say and my dad knew he had to pull over! One time he didn't head my warning and it made for a very bad rest of our trip in the car! Thankfully today I don't throw up much anymore and still don't get sick from riding in a car or plane.

Car sickness is usually related to middle ear things.. Never been car sick or sea sick .. I love it! The rougher the sea gets the more I like it .. its fun! OK it can get a bit frightening sometimes when the ferry tips over some 20% or more.. That was crossing the Irish Sea form Cardiff to Cork in Ireland in November.. there had been no sailings for nearly a week before and there were no sailings for 4 days after our boat "tested the sea" I do not mind if by myself but I had my children on board as well and that changes my fun / protection profile a lot (even now they are grown up!)

I was often "car sick" as I thought at the time, but only on longer school trips by bus. These would involve sharing the sweets that were being offered round! I used to go for the lime flavoured fruit gums- they tasted best! Then I'd start to feel sick, be given barley sugar by the teacher, & of course end up being sick! With hindsight, definitely not motion sickness!!

My wife, who I am convinced is HFI or FBP1-deficient, who brought me to this fantastic community, used to be very carsick as a child.

Regina can, and has, ridden all day in the car. Back seat. She is also good on boats, planes, and carnival rides. No problem with any motion.

I cannot sit in the back seat--even now as an adult and with my HFI under control. If I sit in the front, I'm fine. If I sit in the back, I have to put some blinders on so I can't see peripherally. When I rode the bus as a kid, I had to scoot way down so I couldn't see out the window and read a book.
My guess is if you're already suffering from a permanent nausea as a kid (due to lack of diagnosis and proper diet), that the added peripheral motion is just enough to set off your carefully maintained pressure valve.
Of course, I did notice a trend while riding(before I learned what caused car sickness). If I vomited once, I was good for the duration of the trip. My father took us on a family vacation to Disney World. We drove from Ohio to Florida. It took several days. I only upchucked once at the Ohio border. After that was done and over with I knew I was set for the trip.

Sorry, this thread has been annoying me for a while. As I am very tired, irritated and stressed I will answer on it now. Not everything in life is HFI.
A frequent problem with car sickness is hypoglycemia and many improve if they have eaten a proper meal. The problem is that if you think you are likely to feel car sick you won't eat as you think the less in your stomach the better when you are sick.
One of the coach drivers for the school used a trick and gives kids that are carsick an orange to play with, nothing to do with the healing properties of orange just the texture is a great distraction. Playdough, therapy doughs, plasticine do just as well. It is the distraction and the pumping of the circulation that does the trick.
Meg gets sick in the car if she is reacting, or needs food, not otherwise. Three of her friends get carsick too and they are perfectly healthy. maybe its the parents driving. But as nlfitnes said if Meg says she is feeling sick I pull over very fast and pass her a pot........

Helena was very car sick as a child, always had to sit in front of the bus too. She is not car sick anymore. No official HFI diagnosis yet.
