These are a large chain of really good pubs in the UK (over 780 of them!) Yesterday I went into one for breakfast (the hotel was charging too much) at 11am. I went for the Large Full English ( 2 rashers bacon, 2 sausages, 2 hash browns, 2 eggs, black pudding and toast (I had them hold the tomato and baked beans) To start with I ordered Porridge oats. When the porridge came I only had a 1/2 spoonful and I could tell instantly it had added fructose in it! I have to stress it did not taste very sweet! but I could "feel" the Fructose effect straight away.. it was not Sucrose sugar because that "tastes" before it bites.. if you can get my drift? It being a mix of Glucose and Fructose and the Glucose burning off first. The staff claimed it was straight out of the packet and they had added no sugar when cooking it, so I am assuming it was in their premix. I would suspect the inclusion rate would be below 5g (1 teaspoon full in my small bowl) but it was more than enough to have me pulling faces like a bulldog eating a vinegar flavoured wasp. I washed the taste out of my mouth with a full mug of tea. Anyway they refunded me the 70p difference and I got on with enjoying the rest of the meal. I was not hungry till 5pm after that So if eating breakfast there and you are HFI avoid the porridge. (I was looking forward to that. )

I bet it was an oatsosimple packet, lets face it I bet they don't make proper porridge as not many people eat it these days. You can get original but also flavoured, I made that mistake with Meg once and got the honey one by mistake. Luckily she noticed it was sweet.
It only takes 2 minutes in the microwave.

That would explain it.. thanks. I buy pure porridge oats and eat it raw on my two shredded wheat for breakfast (along with 1.5 teaspoons full of Psyllium husks of course ) Real Porridge is great this time of year if made in the oven over night. The lactose caramelises and the resulting thick creamy boiling hot porridge is simply divine! only put you oven on at its lowest setting however otherwise you will come down to a kitchen full of smoke.. A good bowl of that and out into the cold day feeling like you are on fire!

I agree. Porridge is delicious (made from scratch). I was once very ill indeed on holiday at centreparcs. I had porridge in the Sports Bar, didn't taste at all sweet to me, but I should've twigged when my friends, who are sugar fiends didn't need to add sugar. I was assured it was sugar free by the staff. Started to feel a bit 'not right' halfway through, but finished anyway. Then lunch- tuna mayo baguette. I ate it although I could detect some sweetness in the bread & the mayo. Evening meal- mussels in cream & wine sauce, & assured there was no sugar or fruit in it. Felt ill before I finished that meal, & was very ill for 48hrs+ afterwards. My friends retraced the eateries, & found that there was apple in the porridge, & coconut milk in the mussels. Never again!! That was the last time I refuse to listen to what my body's telling me!! If in doubt, stop eating it!!(Note to myself)!
