I keep a very careful food journal where I log all my foods, along with my bodyfat and weight every day. I keep to a VERY low fructose/sugar diet, under 100mg per day. And one thing that I've discovered, is that when I've had more fructose (either by accident or temptation), my bodyfat and weight goes up for about 3-4 days. Isn't that interesting? I was wondering if anyone else has noticed something similar?
As long as I keep to my SUPER low fructose/sugar diet, my bodyfat and weight stay at a good fitness level for my age and height. Yet another reason to stay away from the bad stuff!!!

hi tikitava you cannot gain several pounds of fat in just a few days. it is a metabolic impossiblity. i suspect what is happening is water retention from the toxic load of the fructose you ingested. your body probably tries to dilute it by holding onto more water than usual. i am really glad you share your stories like this because it makes me realize just how sensitive and careful we must be. esmée ♥

Yes, it probably is water retention, since the bodyfat scale measures via the water in the body. At any rate, it's interesting that ingesting fructose can have so many various effects!

I also keep a very detailed food journal and weigh myself every day, and the past couple months trying to eat very low in fructose, I've noticed the exact same thing. As Esmee said, I know it can't be four pounds of actual fat, and that it's water weight. And that tells me that it's my body holding on to water, trying to dilute and flush out the toxins from the fructose. It's good to know I'm not the only one, and it just gives me more evidence to know that fructose is toxic for my body.

One more thought - it makes sense to me that the time it takes our bodies to lose those extra pounds of water weight is probably just about the time that our bodies take to flush out the toxins from metabolizing fructose. How long does it take for you lose the 3-4 pounds and go back to your usual weight?

I think the inflammation/water weight is probably the correct theory here. You could eat and extremely large meal am put a few pounds on but to physically gain or lose a 4-5 lbs of fat over a day or two would be nearly impossible for most of us. Simply because a pound of fat is aprox 3500 calories, so to gain that you would have to eat between 14000-17500 excess(over what our bodies burn on a given day) calories to gain the 4-5 lbs. in reverse you would have to burn that many to lose it.
Now when our bodies get injured or "poisoned" by the sugars I think it could be a natural defense to amp I'm the fluid levels and try to protect the system or flush out the sugars. Probably why you feel bloated or bogged down after ingesting fructose.

If you have FM, and I suspect that a few of our new visitors have that as opposed to HFI then this is easily explained. if you have any fructose or fructans, unless there is an equal quantity of glucose to draw it through the villi in the large intestines then it sits and ferments in the intestines drawing large amounts of water into the intestine. This is why you get bloating, excessive gas and ultimately diarrhea if there is alot of it. It happens fairly soon after a meal or over several days which is why sometimes it is hard to pin down the exact trigger.
