As an introduction... I'm not sure if I have FHI or FM. I was diagnosed in the 1980’s as having “a sugar problem” by a research group of scientists and doctors who told me that every time they tried to grow my blood cells in a sugar medium they would die. At first they thought it was a fluke - but it occurred repeatedly, so they said to stay away from sucrose and fructose, but alright to eat small amounts of fresh fruit as long as I felt OK. However, I have had an aversion to sweets all my life. I had projectile vomiting as a formula feed infant, failure to thrive, etc - but who knows what was in the 1940’s formulas. Have had three 4-5 hr glucose tolerance tests with "flat curves," at the allergist had a sub-dermal "shot” sugar test [sucrose?] which caused me to faint, and had problems with hypoglycemia at various times during the years. Just wish I could find a doctor who knows about digestive disorders so I could get a definitive diagnosis. It’s certainly not for lack of trying…3 gastro specialists I have seen over the years were basically useless! So, been pretty much been on-my-own with this.
Currently, I am on a dairy free + gluten free + very low sugar diet which help’s a lot! We recently did a DNA celiac test - am negative for both HLA-DQ2 + DQ8 – so was told that it means I could still have it, but very low probability. Possibly the gluten free diet is helping because of the reduction of fructans? It’s obvious that wheat bothers me. Cows milk [sugar+ protein factions] and wheat give me episodes of nausea, bloating, at worst diarrhea and vomiting, and a couple of ER visits with my intestines almost swollen shut.
I recently tried the Sweet Tarts candy mentioned on this blog, but it made my mouth sore + got one of those water blisters I get from sugar. What’s with that? I know that there are different degrees of disease [or we would have all have died at birth with HFI]. Just looking at the various dietary tolerance differences among bloggers on this site shows that some are more sugar sensitive than others.
