What do you use as a substitute for birthday cake?
My kids came over to celebrate my birthday with pizza (mine w/o sauce) this past weekend and everyone else split a piece of cake, but of course I didn't want any.
I would like to hear how the rest of you celebrate birthdays w/o the traditional cake and ice cream.
Thanks.

I'm usually so stuffed from the main course I cannot manage any more food anyway If its a very special occasion I will make sugar and sweeter free trifle or Blancmange for me and a sweetened version for everyone else. If its for a special meal then I will make Pana-cota (boiled cream) where I make again two versions one for everyone else and a sugar free version for me which is really nice! But not for anyone on a diet or needing to give a blood test for cholesterol soon after! I can post list of really nice puddings if you want? Update just posted two on Recipes section enjoy

Tomorrow I will visit my grandmother for her birthday. I bring my own baked cookies, so I don't need to just long for sweet stuff while others eat it. Usually I bring a lot of cookies, so everybody can taste my weird stuff too and discover it is not too weird at all. This evening I ate too many, so no sharing tomorrow. My basic recipe is 150gr of flower (I usually mix rice flower and quinoa or teff flower), 50gr dextrose, 110gr plant-based baking margarine (this could be normal butter, but I'm lactose intolerant), a few pinches sea salt. Sometimes I take 10gr off the flower and add 10gr of cocoa powder. :-) Or I add rosemary, what nobody seems to like except for me, so maybe that's not such good advice. Make sure the dough is as thin as you can make it, so the cookies get crisp (maybe 3 to 4 mm). Make sure the dough rests in the fridge for half an hour before baking it. I usually bake it in one piece and than slide it into smaller pieces right after it leaves the oven. Bake for 30 minutes at 160C and the last 5 minutes at 200C, may vary with different ovens, this is for a hot air oven.

I think I'd like a whole basket full of Red Lobster garlic biscuits instead of a birthday cake--with candles in them of course.
Another delicious option would be a pesto sauce pizza with mozarella, chicken, feta, mushrooms, and spinach. Mmmmm.

I always use one of the recipes posted on this site and make Regina a cake. She eats a piece, we put the rest in the freezer, after throwing away last years left-overs.
Of course we do the same thing with Christmas Cookies. I'll soon go throw out last years. But I HAVE to make them, and she HAS to have a couple. And then she's happy and doesn't feel as thought she's missing anything.
