Hi everyone! I recently found out that I have HFI, and so far I'm not able to eat much besides meat/poultry/fish, rice, and dairy. I do seem to be allergic to soy, although I'm not sure if that applies to fermented soy (soy sauce, etc) as well or not. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about Vietnamese food. It seems that a lot of it is very HFI friendly, since they don't use much sugar, and the vegetables they use seem to be very low in fructose (cilantro, peppers, cucumber, etc), and plenty of rice and meat. Pho? Banh mi? Surely there must be some things that people have found are edible for us? Thanks in advance!

Hi, depending on how sensative you are you may well find these veg are too much fructose still, you might be OK with a tiny bit of them but not as a full portion. the safest veg as far as I am aware are spinach, celery, mushrooms, avocado and artichoke. Others may add to that list.
Rice should be good as long as it is white, brown has too much fructose. And untreated meats are good.

Mumble Peg, Good quality Soy Sauce has never caused me any problems.. I also cannot deal with Soy oil or anything else Soy related.. In the UK they tend to put a tiny amount as "Flour improver" (it adds Protein to the Flour and is a hang over from the Second World war would you believe) this seems not to cause me problems but the inclusion rate is very small. Peppers are OK'ish when uncooked (like Celery and Onion) but become sweet when cooked.. now I am not sure if the cooking effects the Carbohydrates and creates sugar or if the sugar is there all the time and we just cannot taste it before cooking so to be safe leave well alone. More research is needed on this. I used to be able to eat Cucumber as a child but now I cannot go anywhere near it.. If I do its not a HFi reaction I get but a quite violent IBS type.. cilantro I am not familiar with and can offer no opinion. Thai food is far too sweet (I got stuck in Bangkok for 24 hours last year.. it was not good. I survived without causing a fuss by the good graces of British Airways who gave me a large plate of Cheese and crackers to take with me.. after about 1kg (2.2lbs)of cheese in 24 hours I really did not want to eat any more for a few weeks! I am not sure that it will be safe for HFI because I think they have a habit of mixing sugar into all their dressings and sauces.. Certainly the Thai and Vietnamese cook books I have all add lots of sugar and use a lot of fruit as well. Best way to find out is go and try some.. if there was a restaurant locally I would go try it. well I would ask them what I can eat of course but they still get it wrong most times.. well Chinese restaurants in the UK do anyway. Thanks for your replies, guys! I guess that really, I have no business near Vietnamese food. I saw that they make a lot of their wraps and noodles out of rice, which is nice since I'm a little bit allergic to wheat, and that things like pho are made from mostly beef stock, but then of course they will add things like onions to it . . . I really can't tolerate any veggie but rice, it seems. And thank you for the warm welcome, Bill! I live in Oregon, USA.

Oregon.. a place I would love to visit one day. .. along with about 99% of the world I have not seen yet Grew up on Cowboy and Indian TV shows.. a lot of them on the Oregon trail.
