Hi everyone, I am new to this discussion board, so I apologize if this question has already been answered....I was wondering where I would find dextrose? Is it something that would be at the grocery store or do I have to order it? I am so excited to have found this discussion board. I am 29 years old and only within the last year did I think to look up HFI on the internet to get more information. My parents found out I had HFI when they gave me apple juice as a baby. Thankfully, there was a doctor at the hospital I was brought to that was studying HFI! What luck! So I have grown up knowing that fructose and sucrose are off the menu. I have been going off the "safe foods" list that was given to my parents as a baby (1980). Can you imagine my surprise when I recently found out I not only can I eat dextrose, but I can eat sweet tarts?! I literally cried when I bought my first box of candy. It may sound sappy to those of you have been good about keeping up to date with HFI...but it honestly never crossed my mind to look online and question some of the information given to me almost 30 years ago! So now I can't wait to make some of these foods (cake, cookies etc) that I have never been allowed to try as a kid. I just have to first find dextrose....

Hi Jane, welcomed to the board. Well found and well worth the find. Where in the world are you from as this will affect the products available to you. Irene has tried some stuff from the frusano website, apparently they use a safe glucose. Dextrose is glucose but be very careful of your source as not all is pure as we have found out to our cost. We get glucose powder from our chemist. I did try a glucose syrup but Megs was very sick on it. Your parents have done a great job keeping you healthy without internet advice because there seems to be very poor advice about otherwise. You were certainly very lucky to have direct access to a doctor that knows, especially back then, some of us have had very stressful searches. Hopefully, from your experience you will be able to help some of us novices out.

Welcome to the group. I don't know how you made it all those years without dextrose. I think I'd go crazy. I bought a couple bags of dextrose from Amazon.com. Good luck making baked goods. I've had mixed results. The odd thing is that even though dextrose doesn't taste sweet to me, once I've baked it into a product, I tend to think it tastes too sweet. You might have a better time at trying this out as you haven't had to deal with the trial & error phase of HFI as much. Let us know if you stumble onto a good recipe!

Hi Jane, Welcome! Glad you finally thought to check us out. lol. Did you also find the U. of Boston site? www.bu.edu/aldolase/HFI/ They have a sugar chart listing every sugar and whether or not it is safe for HFI. Just remember, it seems every persons tolerance is different. My daughter is "lucky" in that she can handle - and loves - all the sugars that are listed as safe or tolerable. It hasn't been that way for everyone. In 1984 we finally found a Dr who diagnosed my daughter. He was familiar with HFI because he had seen it before. Now thanks to this site, I've found that apparently we were lucky because it's very unusual for ANY Dr, even today, to even know what HFI is. So I'm going to repeat Charlie's question. Where in the world are you? I'm in PA, USA. My Dr came from the Boston area. As Charlie has stated, many things are different in different areas. Things that we use in the states are not ok in Canada. (Bisquik coming to mind or Smarties VS Rockets). And of course we have some members from across the big pond. Their products are all different from this side of the water. Even in the states, depending on the area, there are things you can get that's not in other areas. As for the dextrose. In the states, you can order it online from several sites. Or - as in my area - you can get it from a "Brew your own beer" store. We also have some Amish stores that used to carry it. I haven't checked for quite some time, but they still may. Hope to hear from you again. With any questions you may have, and with any ideas you have that may help us. Good to have you onboard. Tammy

Ok so i said that I didn't have any information about HFI but that was due to my own ignorance. I should have looked it up online a LONG time ago. I am originally from Rhode Island. My doctor at Rhode Island Hospital just happened to be studying HFI when I showed up sick after drinking apple juice. When they were doing the studies in Boston (early 1980s), I was one of the kids they took blood from every few months! I was kind of traumatized from the experience of having to go to the hospital for that study, so my parents never really made me go back when it was done. So I religiously stuck to the no sucrose/fructose diet and I haven't had any health problems (that I had to be hospitalized for) since. Thank you so much for the info. about dextrose. I can't wait to try it out!

We use the same quantities of dextrose in recipes but find you have to add slightly more liquid as it does come out a bit drier otherwise. It is a bit trial and error. Good luck

Hi, nice to see another person finding this site great. We had some problems with dextrose and found that corn based dextrose is different to wheat based dextrose. We got ours from a beer brewing shop, but now can get it from our local supermarket, but remember we are from OZ.

Apparently on the Boston diet you can have some lemon, however I think that it depends on your tolerance. My daughter cannot even touch the stuff. Maybe give it a go at a good time and see if it is OK for you. Good luck with the recipe hunting. It can be lots of fun.
