Well, they scheduled an appointment for 2.5 weeks from now. They wouldn't let me see the GI I had requested since I don't have any prior "work up". So, they scheduled me with a "fellow" (does that mean student?) to do some blood work and to talk about my history. I have to give them credit, though, since they said they may schedule me with a geneticist or an endo based on my work-up results and that a GI may not be the best fit. So it seems like they looked into this a bit and have some idea of the condition. The woman I talked to was very leery, though, and told me it's highly unlikely that I have this condition. I had to laugh at that - yes, statistically it IS really unlikely. I'll keep you all posted on the results. One frustrating thing is that I talked with my OB/GYN about my condition at length when I had to do the Gestational Diabetes test while I was pregnant. I went on and on and told her how I wouldn't be able to do the sugar test (where they have you consume basically a non-carbonated sugar soda and then follow up with blood work). She conceeded and let me do a different test. It was the most in depth conversation I had with any doc about my condition, but she bascially shrugged her shoulders and wasn't interested in pursing it. Apparently my files have no notes or records from the doc regarding this conversation, and this would have been useful for my "work-up" files. I guess it's a moot point now since they are still schduling an appointment for me. It just would have helped me sound a bit less crazy.

I guess I was lucky with my PCP. I set up an appointment to talk with her about it--hellbent on convincing her that I had HFI. She actually pulled up websites while I talked about it and read up on it (she had never heard of it before). At the end, she referred me to a geneticist. I told her, "I didn't think you'd believe me." (After so many people telling me I'm crazy and forcing me to eat fruit, I might be a bit crazy...maybe less-so because my brother had it, too.) She made a point of reassuring me that she DID believe me--which made me happy. So, stick to your guns. Don't back down. They'll probably do everything to say that you don't have HFI and you actually have DFI. Don't forget to mention hypoglycemia--I think that helped my case a bit. And be sure to say that you've had your condition since birth. Good luck and keep us posted!
