His all, been lurking for a couple of months, I'm a 55 yr old self diagnosed fructose intolerant/malabsorber , I don't know but it really doesn't matter I've come to the conclusion that one has to listen to their body and eat what is compatible. ( hope that doesn't sound arrogant) I've been a junk food junkie most of my life especially sweets, about 10 yrs ago I went on the Atkins diet just for the weight loss and lose I did, 12 to 15 lbs a month easy, and I was eating all I wanted, but I was also very strict about it, the only carbs I ate came from iceberg lettuce. I have also been a very moody person, after about a month on the diet I noticed my mood swing all but disappeared . AT the time I knew nothing about gluten ,casein or fructose malabsorption, so when I got down to 150 lbs (down from 220) I started adding some carbs ( Atkins was just concerned about carbs from what I understand he really didn't know why his diet worked) just small amounts like some A1 steak sauce or a candy bar and then the moodiness started re-appearing . Well long story short I fell off the wagon. About a year ago, back up to 220, got disgusted, got back on Atkins was doing pretty good but I would add some veggies like broccoli and cauliflower and would feel lousy , was loosing weight fast but be up and down . By this time I knew about gluten and casein but had no idea about fructose. So one day I am really depressed and I keep thinking back to the first time I was on Atkins , everything seemed to be so good or was my memory fooling me. For what ever reason I googled sugar sensitivity and I came across the Wikipedia entry on fructose malabsorption and I read all the links, especially the one about fructose/sorbitol and depression. I remembered that I had just switched brands of sub-lingual B12 , I picked up the bottle and the first two ingredients were fructose and sorbitol. I had taken one a few hours earlier (had been for a few days) so I threw it out along with all the veggies and decided to ride it out, the next evening while watching TV I could feel the wet blanket/foggy brain sensation lifting, a very distinct event, then the next morning I was a happy as I'd ever been. Since then I've been on the Al Bundy diet LOL , meat and potatoes. I only added the potatoes after reading this site, I think I have a problem with the white rice. I've also alway suffered from bouts of fatigue, this too has gone away ( mostly). I'm glad I found this site I can relate to so much of what board members have gone through as well as their kids. Thanks ( gee, that was long)
