The hardest thing is to find ham that is cured without sugar (or honey). Smithfield is sometimes ok. Sam's Club usually carries one that is ok. Sometimes I get a thick slice and sometimes a chunk. Either way, cut it up into small cubes. Dice potatoes. Add lots of water. Cook slowly until the potatoes are partly cooked. Then add green string beans. Just add water if needed and cook it slowly. You can make it on the stove, or in a crock pot slow cooker. In the cooker you don't have to watch it as close and you can just let it cook all day. The flavor is usually better in a cooker. If the ham is salty, that is all you need. If the ham isn't salty you may need to add a little salt to taste. As far as how much of each, I pretty much use equal parts of ham and potatoes and a few more string beans. But if you like one thing better than the other, make it to suit you. I then freeze it in individual bowls so I can just take one at a time out . We just eat butter bread with it. Sometimes Regina puts saltines in hers, but I prefer it without them.
