My son is 10 months. We are fairly new to this HFI thing, he was diagnosed (finally) at 7 months. According to one of the lists we have corn is not okay as it contains fructose. However, from reading other sources it appears that degermed cornmeal is? So what is the difference between that and whole grain yellow corn meal? I thought i finally found a snack he can munch on for babies, but that is the first ingredient and im just not sure. It was my understanding that single grain is all HFI kids should have, but then i read other articles stating that there are some whole grains that are okay! Im so confused! Thank you for any help on this matter, we are very happy to have found this site! -Charlie's Mom

Hi there. Sawyer, my littlest, does like corn grits that are made from degerminated corn, but he can't handle too much of it. I also have some Quaker corn meal that is degerminated, but we don't use it very often. We seem to have some issue with corn in our house. We usually stay away from ALL whole grains here. I am in the process of testing a cereal that has whole grain oats and barley in it before I let the kids try it. We can't do barley malt, but we are hoping barley itself is okay, but I'm not getting my hopes up. We also have issues with oats. The kids haven't tried oats in awhile. Best of luck to you and your little one. I know this board has been SO helpful to us as we have tried to navigate this diet.

So, the ingredient on your snack is listed as "whole grain yellow corn meal"? I have not heard of that. Okay, after googling a bit it looks like "whole grain yellow corn meal" does indeed have the germ, which is why they call it "whole grain". So I would steer clear of it for your son. Bummer. I would stay away from anything "whole grain". Typically, however, regular corn meal and corn products are okay.
Have you tried plain rice cakes? Those can be good for little ones and turn to mush easily. I'll try to think of more things...

From what I have read, corn syrup solids may not be purely dextrose. Check out this link here: www.cspinet.org/reports/chemcuisine.htmUnder corn syrup it states that it is "mostly" dextrose and that the corn syrup "may be dried and used as corn syrup solids" Karo Syrup is considered to be corn syrup but the company's website states that it contains glucose and other sugars. So, if corn syrup solids were made from this kind of corn syrup they would not be safe for HFIers. I am assuming that corn syrup solids should be in the "tolerated depending upon purity" category.

GOod Luck. I am new to this site, but I have found so much information which is helping us. My daughter cannot tolerate any corn whatsoever for some reason, she is very sensitive. So we cannot be too much help with this, but I wanted to welcome you and let you know that you are not alone on this planet. We are scattered everywhere.

Amanda,
We have major problems with corn here too. Such a bummer! Found some cheese puffs made with degerminated corn, but they still bothered us. Grrrr ... that's okay - it's really just processed junk anyway, right?!
