Have been "fructose free" now for about 14 months and suddenly i've been diagnosed as lactose intolerant as well. i am 40 years old. never a problem w/ fructose or lactose until recently. what is going on? my GI offered no help other than to avoid both fructose and now lactose. anyone else have similar issues? i'm wondering what's next. i eat so little as it is... i'm nervous. When i took the fructose out of my diet i was doing great for a year and then the lactose crept up on me. any thoughts? suggestions? similar issues out there? HELP! thank you! karen

Hi, My husband is also FI and lactose intolerant. The only milk he can tolerate is "Organic Valley Lactose Free" milk. He's tried other milk that say they can be tolerated by lactose intolerant people, but has had problems with them.
He can use Nucoa margarine, and aged Tillamook cheese.
Good luck! Kate

Karen, do you have a problem with Casein (Protein) too? That could be a reason why the lactaid isn't working.

I'm trying to think of foods with a low-glycemic index. Those should help you feel full quicker and last longer Try peanuts or almonds as a snack. Cheese is good, too. Potato chips/crisps should provide the energy it sounds like you're craving, but they have a higher glycemic index--so you will just be hungry again an hour later.

Colormist ,tk for you're answer. YES I'M HUNGRY......I am less than 100 pounds. Peanut and almond do not work.make me sick. Pistachio is ok.Chips is good ;DThe funny thing ,i have been vegetarian 12 years lollllllllllllllll I MISS FRUITS AND VEGGIES............
Pasta ,rice ,chicken steak is good ,but i am tired of it. I work hard physically ,i do not know what i need ,but i need energy ,sometime i feel my body shotting down,i try to find a boost. I make homemade green tea with lemon, but i feel i need sugar. I am 43 years olds with a very heavy medical history,i had a bad breast cancer after my second child.I have been fighting since 6 years to keep a life quality and my family.
Since the diagnostic of intolerances i have been consulting someone in biologic decodage.I fell better, but i need people that live with those intolerances to guide me.
sorry again for my writting i am french canadian ,i can not find much in french.
I am even ready to go in the state to get some help ,just to tell you how my life is a nightmare TK again

I also can't eat Dairy (or gluten). For snacks I eat almonds, Almond Nut thins- a cracker found in the USA, Potato chips, a sesame cracker made from rice flour- it is from Canada, Black and green olives, and I found a snack called potato cheechas. If you have any gluten free stores in your area, they usually provide food for many food intolerances, not just gluten.
My sugar fix is Pixie sticks and Smarties (American version).
I think your English is great!

Mmmmm, olives. Because I forgot to do this yesterday, Welcome to the forum, Suzanne. If you can't find pixie sticks or smarties (USA version), then you might try ordering powdered glucose (Dextrose) from amazon.com. I use it in baking and tea. If you need help finding it online, just shoot me a message.

Bienvenue Suzanne,
I am new to this forum as well. I have been following a very strict fructose, and lactose free diet for about 15 years. (Diagnosed in Montreal). I am now in Ontario. I used to buy dextrose from Papillon Bulk foods in Pointe Claire Plaza (West Island) or from the make your own beer and wine stores. They often sell it in 1 or 2kg packages. As for the Lactaid products, I never had any success with them either. Good Luck!

Hi Suzanne,
Typical meals are pretty boring in my house: macaroni & cheese, tuna casserole, hamburgers, pasta salad, pesto pasta, chicken breast, mashed potatoes (or any white potato, really), green beans, spinach, white rice, chicken noodle soup, tuna sandwich, salmon patties... I'm lazy and since I have to cook everything from scratch, I tend to prepare the easiest thing to cook.
I have noticed that most HFI meals tend to look pretty white or dark green. Color in general tips me off to something I shouldn't be eating (followed by smell or taste).
Be sure to check all the ingredients on anything you eat at all--even things you think might be safe, like salt, can have sugar in them.

I don't know where to post my questions....... Colrmist what do you put in you're tuna sandwich?I think we can't put Hellmman mayonnaise? Can we have dijon mustard?
Last night i was preparing a smke salmon entree,i read all my label and i was chok there's was sugar in my salmon..........
Is it ok if i take Dextrose candy when i feel i need sugar? How many can i take in a day.I found that after one my dizyness goes away
I found an organic bread ,that seems to work for me since wheat seems to irritate me.It 's kamut bread ,is it ok? Today my brother is coming from Ottawa ,he got me Dextrose ,so i am looking forward to cook. I guest someone said that Smarties from the States are ok?My sister is there for the we ,so she's going to check that for me. I find that hard ,since i am french,i find more info in english .In french i find info from Europe so the labels are different also the products. This site 's great ,because i feel quite alone,i live quite away from any big city's.People think i'm crazy with my HFI and lactose problem. Have a good we Suzanne

My daughter only eats rice, fresh meat, egg whites and hard cheddar cheese. She is getting bored with her diet but she gets so sick that she would rather be well than have a varied diet. I suppose your choice of food depends on what you are prepared to deal with. My daughter cannot take any sugar at all, not even dextrose, but we think that it is corn based dextrose. good luck with your search. You are not alone. This forum is great for discovering a large number of people have similar issues. Welcome and hope you get lots of info from this site. Look up the postings from the recipe section. It is great.

Regina gets her calcium through antacid tablets. "Care One" is a generic brand that is safe. Check your local stores for generics that may be ok in your area.

What about eating lactose free cheese? Finlandia is one of several brands that sports a lactose free label. I'm not sure how much cheese you'd need to eat to get the recommended daily allowance, so you may still need the supplement, but at least your diet would be expanded. Mmmm...grilled cheese sandwich!
(Side note on the grilled cheese sandwich: since butter has lactose, you may want to use mayo instead to get your bread crispy.)

OK, I just read the rest of this thread...
If you are OK with pistachios, you may want to try walnuts, Also, My mother soaks all of her nuts for 24 hours and then rinses before using them. She says it makes them easier to digest. She she also blends up walnuts with water (after soaking/rinsing)to make a walnut milk to drink in place of cow's milk.
Can you get or have you tried tomatillos? They sell both canned (hispanic foods section) and fresh versions in stores here, but not sure if other areas do. That may add some extra taste for you. Also, have you tried avocados? They are OK for some and not for others. If you want some spice, you may want to try enchilada sauce...red or green may work, just watch out for onions and sugar as some manufacturers use those as ingredients. (Quick enchiladas: dip corn or flour tortilla in warmed enchilada sauce, sprinkle white rice, cheese, garlic chicken, and chopped olives down the middle of tortilla, roll and place in oiled pan, pour a bit more sauce over top, sprinkle more cheese and bake at 375 deg F for 20 minutes.) Hard cheddar is perfect for enchiladas. If the tortillas hurt your tummy, you can just skip those and bake the insides in a pan.

I am both FM & Lactose Intol. Even though I tested positive, I think can handle the Lactose issue better than most - it seems to be a quantity thing mostly and perhaps certain cheeses affect me more than others. Some energy food suggestions for variety in the diet (any would require the use of homemade ingredients - stocks, etc - to avoid things like vinegar, onions, etc): eggs, polenta, risotto, rye crackers, popcorn, natural "corn nuts" (see inkacrops.com), any nuts that you can tolerate have multiple nutritional advantages, barley, baked potato, gluten free pasta (corn, rice, quinoa)... My FAVORITE gluten free pasta = www.rustichella.it/English/home_eng.html. and I am REALLY picky about pasta - totally addicted. This company makes some of the best wheat flour dried pasta on the market so I incredibly excited to find that they make corn pastas and rice pastas. Mayonnaise in INCREDIBLY simple to make at home the only tool required is a blender - stick or immersion blenders are the best. You can do a web search for recipes & sub champagne vinegar or lemon juice for the acid. My sweetie made me some using a splash of orange juice as a sweetener. I will try to post the recipe soon. The best dextrose "snack" sources seem to be diabetic glucose tablets (i.e. Dex 4), pixie sticks and US Smarties (for some reason the larger size candies seem to work better for me). Sweet Tarts are okay too. ALL of these can be purchased @ Amazon.com. I have been trying to find a source of dextrose tablet or candy that doesn't have artificial colorings or flavorings but no luck yet. A nice web source for powdered dextrose, powdered glucose, and glucose syrup is chefrubber.com. Page link = www.shopchefrubber.com/search.php?mode=search&page=1&keep_https=yes.
