Hi
I'm a bit confused. I thought anyone with HFI cannot take Green Peppers, I have read a few postings where green peppers are ok.
Anyone help
Thanks

Irene- We haven't tried green peppers again since restriction. Based on our responses to other veggies I am assuming they will probably not be okay. We are staying away from all fruits and vegetables still right now, while Calvin continues to heal. We do not have an HFI diagnosis yet, though, so please take that into consideration.
It does seem like there is a pretty wide range of fructose sensitivity on this board, even among those with definite HFI diagnosis. I have been reading what others can have in terms of veggies and I am quite jealous. But, until we find out exactly what we are dealing with I am not risking liver and kidney damage since I just found out my grandmother passed away from something involving her liver when my mom was only 12.
Hope your little one is well and thriving on the new diet! -Sandra

Regina does fine on green peppers. I don't know if it is one she needs to limit or not as she doesn't really care for them. If they are in meatloaf, etc, she eats them, but its not something she choses for a snack.

Peppers are on the no list on the british diet, the lowest tolerance list is celery, globe artichokes, mange tout (surprisingly), mushrooms, spinach and watercress. Not really anything appealing to a child. Higher level intolerance lists aubergine, asparagus, beansprouts, brocolli, cabbage, cauliflower, courgette, cucumber, fennel, artichoke, leeks, lettuce, marrow, new potato, pumpkin, radish, spring greens, swede and turnip Like Sandra I'm not giving Megan any veg or fruit for a long time to give her system time to recover as we have had such a long run of ill health, I think it is paying off as she is looking much better the last few days and finally 3 nights sleep. It does seem to be a long, slow trial and error process, but we can't try anything until we have had a clear run which takes at least 3 weeks after ingesting something wrong. Interestingly on the nutrition data from what I can see canned sweetcorn seems to be one of the lowest in fructose, now that doesn't make sense! But it is on the no list so I won't attempt it.

Another query on the recipes mentioned that I have is white wine vinegar and mustard, I would have thought vinegar surely has sugar content.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I don't think I'll take the chance with green peppers, as Hannah has been well since she was first diagnosed in December 2007.

Definitely NOT basalmic. My guess is that vinegar is like wine. Much of the sugar is fermented into the acids (versus alcohol), so you aren't left with much (if any) sugar. I believe basalmic is purposely sweetened with other sugars since many like the sweet/sour taste. As for green peppers...I don't care much for them. As with Regina, I may eat a bite or two of them if they are mixed in a casserole, but I never eat them raw or plain and would ask for them to be left out of a dish.

Yes, balsamic vinegar sold in supermarkets is usually red wine vinegar mixed with a strong vinegar and laced with caramel and sugar. I do fine with small amounts of apple cider vinegar and white vine vinegar. I also eat very small amounts of green peppers but only if I'm served it and it's difficult to pick out of the dish. (But I also eat the occasional red pepper that way as well.) As long as it's not a lot and it doesn't happen often, I'm fine with it.
