Hi, I just found this forum and it's my first time posting. Apologies if this turns into a text wall.
My Fiancée and I are getting married soon and are planning on trying for our first kid. Exciting times!
We did the DNA test and both of us are HFI carriers, so there's a 25% chance our kid will have it. It was the first time I had ever heard of it. We have a doctors appointment soon and I've been reading up a storm, but I'm having a hard time finding a description of it from the human side. That's not to say that we're particularly discouraged.
Both my partner and I have always avoided sweet foods. Largely by preference (I just don't like sweet food and drink, even as a kid) but sugary things make us both feel kind of ill. Oddly, and maybe fortuitously, the dietary guidelines I've read match what we like to eat at home to a T. They read exactly like our grocery lists, it's uncanny. It's not a diet, I feel like I eat whatever I want, it's just that this is what I want to eat. Which gives me a lot of confidence that we wouldn't have to make major changes to how we'd eat as a family. However that could be a supposition.
- What is it like/ how was it growing up?
- How does it feel when you eat something you shouldn't have?
- Have you every inadvertently eaten too much Fructose/sugars? What happened? How did it resolve?
- Is there something you found out that you wish you knew sooner?
- What happens if you're eating a sandwich and find out there's cranberry sauce in it? How does it compare to a severe peanut allergy?
- I've struggled with non diabetic hypoglycemia throughout my life, but have been able to compete in competitive sport the whole time without issue (swim team, rugby, football/soccer), would that be different with HFI?
- What about drinking? (gross sweet drinks aside)
- What happens if my kid gets talked into an ice cream sandwich at a sleepover?
- How self regulating is it in adolescence? I eat x, makes me feel bad so I don't eat x anymore.
- Are there flair ups? Is that even a thing in this context?
I don't mean to be insensitive or to pry, just I've found a lot of medical writing but little from everyday people. We're planning on having a few kids so HFI is something I have to think about. I'd really appreciate any help developing a deeper understanding of what living with it is like.
