Starting thew ball rolling with cheese straws and pastry based snacks
To Plain pastry add the following:-
Finely grated hard cheese (Parmesan or similar)
and crumbled mild or strong Cheddar type cheese or any other sort you have in the fridge.. only not wet types like cream cheese
Mix in and roll out.
Cut using a pizza cutter or sharp knife into strips and after twisting them up place them on an oiled baking tray and cook in a preheated oven at usual pastry temperature.
They can be brushed with milk / milk & egg and have poppy seeds or a very few cellery seeds (they are VERY strong tasting of cellery) could be sprinkled on top as well.
This also works well with puff pastry.
Also they can me be made with very finely chopped fried bacon added to the pastry.
Instead of adding cheese simply butter the rolled out pastry with Marmite or Vegemite and either cut in strips like for cheese straws
or
Roll pastry after coating and then cut into thin slices (across the roll like slicing a Swiss roll up) which when cooked look like danish pastry's!
and can be used as bisects with other toppings on them. Cream cheese is really good on them.
Plain pastry made into a sheet and filling pastry cases to make tart-lets, fill the pastry cases with cheese sauce, and a variety of fillings.
Volovants (can someone please supply the correct spelling for them?? ) can be made with lots of HFI safe fillings also.
Tuna and sour cream (instead of Mayo) is really good, cheesy scrambled eggs with chives is good also, as are all sorts of fillings using mushrooms.
Mashed Sardines with capers is more an adult choice as are sardines and chili sauce but very good to the adult taste buds.. Yum making me hungry thinking about them...
Pizza can be made without the tomato base and topped with lots of things and loads of cheese too
its good to eat cold as well as hot.
I uses a standard bread recipe for the base.. I know its not authentic but easy and very tasty.
Hope this helps anyone with other suggestions?
