For as long as I can remember, my skin has always turned very yellow from the consumption of leafy greens and orange vegetables?
I have always postulated that the skin color change is due to the fact that I have very light skin and the carotenes just "show" in me more than others.
But now that I know about HFI, I am wondering if the fact that these vegetables make me yellow is an indication that my liver is unable to properly process and eliminate the excess carotenes. I have not yet been diagnosed with HFI, but strongly suspect it.
Have any others on this forum noticed yellow skin from eating green/orange vegetables?
I know lots of healthy people who eat just as many green/orange vegetables as I do, yet their skin never turns orange from eating them.

The only reason I can think of if your liver is shot then the extra vegetables (or more precisely the sugar in them) are causing a skin colour change because of chemicals not getting cleaned out of your blood I have only seen this in alcoholics who's livers are on their last legs.. but as I say I other than this I have no idea.
Have you had a Liver enzyme test to see what state your liver is in? If you have HFI and have been eating vegies then it should be in quite a poor state for many months after going on a Fructose free diet, maybe even years before it starts to fully recover.

Hi ukbill,
my liver enzymes are normal but i have trouble digesting fats and carotenes are fat soluble so i was thinking that it could my liver function is compromised to some extent, but not enough to cause enzymes to increase. my eyes do not turn yellow, only my skin, so i do not think it is jaundice and neither have any of the docs i have consulted. so it might just be a metabolism/enzyme issue. i am just thinking outloud here...
thanks for your response.

jaundice that's the word that was escaping me Question are you HFi ie do you go Hypoglycaemic if you eat sugar? or DFi / FM? or Just plain individual like so many of us

ukbill--i have been plagued by hypoglycemia all my life. just thought it was normal because my mother has it too, though she does not have all the other health problems i do.
if i eat fruit, my blood sugar will start to drop within an hour and if i don't eat something soon enough i will get a very severe migraine with nausea and vomiting.
i also am driven to binge eat on "safe" foods after i have eaten fruit or anything else with fructose in it.
also, i am sensitive to environmental chemicals and have severe menstrual cramping (estrogen dominance), both of which are linked to compromised liver function.

mmm sounds like you need a strict HFI diet for a number of months to get your liver sorted out then. And stop eating damn fruits!
