Very Cool Tikitavi,
So other brands of vodka other than Belvedere have sugar in them?
I want to get one of these kits, there are a few things I've always been curious if they have any sugar content or not...like chamomile tea or Guiness draught for example.

I think UKBill mentioned that some vodkas might have sugar added after the fact? So it's important to be careful.
Please keep in mind that these strips also will test for glucose in addition to fructose, so it's not totally perfect for our needs, but I feel like it's a place to start anyway. I've noticed so far in my testing with these strips, that when I have a reaction to something, it shows up high on these strips, and safe foods for me have shown up with no detectable sugars. So for me this seems to be working as a way to possibly test something BEFORE eating - just maybe!
I would be curious about the Guinness too. I love it but I always have a reaction from it!
The tests are called Accuvin Residual Sugars Testing Kit, they are available through many different vendors online. I personally ordered them from FallBright the Winemakers Shop.

My son in Australia had a "water purification unit" which produced some pretty damn fine smooth vodka.. However it all has to be watered down before drinking, we ran the lawn mower on the headers! I suspect when Vodka and other drinks are "watered down" the distilleries add certain additives to produce the finished drink.. this is certain in all american "spirits" such as Bourbon, Southern Comfort etc.. One distillery can produce Vodka gin and Rum.. all from the same base stock alcohol.. German Purity standard beers should be fine.. they contain barley, hops and water.. that is it! OK there will be a tiny amount of Fructose in the barley germ but 99% of the sugars will be maltose before the yeast starts getting at it. so the residual amount is very small.. small enough for me to drink 12 or more bottles before falling over.. but not from an HFI reaction.. I'm a lightweight when it comes to drinking beer, or any alcohol these days. .

Bill, 12 bottles of beer doesn't sound very lightweight to me! If I drank 2, I'd have a migraine for days.

What do you guys think of Grey Goose Vodka? I don't really drink much, but when I do it's usually Grey Goose either dirty or sour.

Grey goose is about $!00 / £50 a bottle in the UK so no I have not tried it.. however in the UK anything with a "Sour" tag usually means it has added sugar.. mad I know but true

Reading through all the emails is really interesting and underlines the differences for all of us as to what we can tolerate. I have never been able to drink alcoholic drinks, usually because they make me nauseous or I don't like the taste beyond one sip. So, don't know what they all are like. My husband and I tried to drink wine at night for a while as it is suppose to be good for older folks hearts ...so I would have just 1/4 cup of dry white...and would wake up in the morning sick to my stomach every time. Even a few sips of beer makes me ill for days afterwards. But, I really must admit that I have not really done extensive testing with alcoholic drinks. I am lucky to be able to tolerate a few sips of Fresca or ginger ale on occasion...but would be really pushing it to finish off a 1/2 can. So, I usually order fizzy water with lemon - it looks like a "drink" but has no sugar , and makes me feel like I am joining in.

Bill
Grey Goose here in the states in not nearly so expensive, maybe $35 a bottle. Too many places started using Rose's brand lime juice (yuck) for "sour" drinks so I gave up on that and stick mostly to ordering dirty now. That being said, I only have a drink every couple months now. I use to live and work in China, and I had enough drinking for a lifetime then.

Flanagan, I can imagine tummyache, I cannot even take more than a couple of teaspoons of any wine! It is all far to sweet for me even the most dry white or red wine. I get an instant hangover if I drink more than one or two sips. Really bad thumping head and nauseous. However beer made form Maltose seems to be fine Maltose is basically two Glucose molecules linked together. The best beers for us with HFI are those made to the German Purity standards.. Ingredients:- Barley, hops, yeast & water. Also see, to be hangover clear as well;) well at least for me anyway.
