Hi, I'm 26 weeks pregnant with HFI and my OBGYN wants me to take a gestational diabetes test. To do so they make you drink 50 grams of Glucola, and I am wondering if anyone knows if it is safe to have? What are the ingredients in it? Anyone have the same experience and what did they do? I tried Googling for the ingredients, but I couldn't find a reliable list. Thanks!
Do not drink it!!! I couldn't get the lab to confirm what was in it when I took the test, and I wouldn't risk it. There is a very easy alternative...it is called a fasting test. It takes a little longer to do, but it is a very safe alternative that does not involve drinking that sugary mess.
The basic gist of the fasting test is you fast all night, get your blood draw in the morning, go out and eat a big meal, then wait one hour and have your blood tested again. From these results they can tell if you have diabetes problems. I did this twice (with both of my pregnancies) and passed with flying colors.
Your OB should be aware of this alternative for you. If not, insist on it.
Good luck and welcome to the forum! And congratulations on your pregnancy.
Absolutely refuse to take the Test with Glucola. I had my last baby 20+ years ago, but I remember that it was no problem to take a substitute test. I don't remember the fasting or blood draw part (I must have done that). I just remember having a great excuse to go out and enjoy a huge breakfast buffett. Yumm.
Hi, I'm brand new to this board but I felt compelled to comment. I don't know exactly what is in this Glucola is but I know that when I was tested 19 years ago for gestational diabetes they told me I would have to drink a cup of pure glucose and I was TERRIFIED because I knew that sugar always made me sick. I was astonished when it had no effect at all--that is part of what later helped me to realize that I had HFI. (Still officially undiagnosed, because my doctor refused, but I could have authored the list of symptoms.) So if it is pure glucose and your problem is with fructose, I would not worry about it. Just my $.02.
