Regina does fine on the puffed corn cereal. I've never seen the little puffed corn cakes, but I would give them to her without a second thought.
When you write all that corn stuff out like that, it really doesn't make any sense, but for what ever reason, that is how it works.
I don't have to limit corn meal, either. She can eat it everyday.
I don't know what Palenta is.
I also allow corn flour. Just like the rest of these corn products, it dosn't make sense, but seems to be fine.

Polenta is an allowed item on the diet list from Kerryn. I have been using it pretty much as gospel since it is so extensive. Do you still have it around?
We recently tried some corn tortilla chips and they were horrible almost immediately. If you haven't tried them, I wouldn't. We make nachos with Lays plain potato chips and he likes them.

Polenta sounds like something I would use. If I read it as an ingredient, I would let her have it.
I've never thought about grits. I probably would have said no, just thinking it was corn, but since reading Kristen's link, I guess it should be ok. I'll probably never try it since it's more of a southern dish, and since the only time we'll really get the chance (without making it myself) would be when we are on vacation in the south. And when we're on vacation, we take NO chances on anything we aren't already sure of.
Regina does fine with tortilla chips, as long as there isn't anything else in it. BUT watch the melted cheeses on it. some of those kind of cheese products aren't pure cheese. And a lot of them contain sugar. So Alice, it very well may have been the cheese and not the tortilla. When we go to the fair, or some such thing, we will check the cheesesteaks (minus the bun of course) and almost always the melted cheese from a can they use has sugar.
Taco shells and nacho chips are the same as tortillas. As long as nothing else is in them, I allow them.
I will look for puffed corn cakes next time I'm at the store, just for curiosty, if nothing else. They do have the plain, white rice cakes, but they are so bland that I don't usually pick them up for her. And when I do, I always ask her if she wants some more cardboard cakes.
Orville Reddenbacher makes a popcorn cake. they are just like a rice cake except they are pretty good tasting, but since I've never allowed popcorn, I've never allowed them for Regina.

Hi Alice!
Just as an fyi Foley and Faith did horribly with corn chips. They are Foley's absolute favorite!!! We tried some recently - 4 each - and they were "lit" for atleast 3 days! I don't think we've had luck with anything corn related!

thankyou for your info on the corn, maybe that is why it doesn't seem to make sense? Maybe it is the actual amount of fructose in the end product? So, do you eat whole corn? Alice (do you have toy poodles? We are considering breeding ours soon!)

Hi all,
Here’s what corn products I eat:
Popcorn–but I have to be in the mood for it (same with peanut butter)
Puffed corn cereal–taste like popcorn and is really good
Cornmeal–I use it when I make pizza to coat the pizza stone and I can eat cornmeal pizza dough from Trader Joe’s, though the calories in it are outrageous, as compared to regular dough.
Taco shells are safe for me too.
Cornchips–the plain ones are safe, and Dorritos (cheese and guacamole flavor) and the like are OK too. Cheetos are among my favorite. I’ve never had a problem with any chips in a Mexican restaurant, but don’t eat too many because of the fat and calories (up to 20 per chip) in them.
Tortillas–the fresh one in restaurants are really good (and I crave them), some of the supermarket brands have sugar.
Tamales (corn part) is usually OK, unless it is the sweet corn (duh)
Polenta, I REALLY enjoy polenta, and make it at home often. In restaurants, when they cook it with more oil/butter than I use at home-and sometimes deep-fry, it is REALLY good. If you’ve never tried it, find an Italian restaurant that serves it and try it. (I usually eat polenta in Italian restaurants, as Mexian restaurants often mix in a red sauce or sweet corn, the Italian kind is usually cooked with olive oil and seasoned with herbs)
Homeny– Is fine, not a favorite of mine though. If I do buy it, I buy the canned variety in the Mexican or Italian food isle (can’t remeber).
Grits–they are fine, but I prefer cream of wheat instead.
Am I forgetting anything?

Hi,
I meant Cheetos-I just grouped all "chips" together. Actually I don't like Fritos as much as I like the cheese flavored chips.
Try the puffed corn cereal--they also make puffed rice.
I also really like Uncle Sam's Cereal (not the berry one)--both the regular cereal and the hot cereal--I don't have any problems with it and it tastes really good. I'm not sure a toddler will appreciate the taste of flaxseeds though. If he has a problem with oats--I don't know how he'll react. I buy it at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods.
For other snack ideas: I melt cheese over Shredded Wheat cereal and sprinkle a little ranch powder on it for pseudo nachos. (careful-too much of that ranch powder, though it is very tasty, makes you cough)

Coley’s issues with flaxseed may be in part from our (all people, not just HFIers) inability to digest whole flaxseeds. (See link to article below) I use ground flaxseed in yogurt and some dishes.
I’ve had all of Coley’s favorite snacks, I also like Pirate’s Booty and Girlfriends’ Booty (though sometimes I’ve gotten a bad batch of Girlfriends’–it tastes a bit off.) I also really enjoy SoyCrisps–sold right next to Smart Puffs and the rest. My husband bought me extra supply of Smart Puffs while I was studying to get my teaching credential–any extra bit helps.
We just had tacos the other night and used Stackable–that’s not the brand name-but the tacos have a flat bottom so they stand on their own–though they should be called Crackables, b/c they crack pretty easily. I’ve found a few brands without sugar, but I can’t remember the names.
I also season the meat with McCormick Grill Mates Montreal Steak Seasoning (Ingredients: Coarse Salt, Spices (Including Black Pepper and Red Pepper), Garlic, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Natural Flavor, and Extractives of Paprika.)
I keep trying all kinds of different seasonings, but this one is still one of my favorites. I use it on all meats and green salads sometimes–I really helps my salt cravings.

I find it so amazing that each person here is as different as they are in terms of tolerance.
1 tortilla chip and Nate is off for at least a few days. Popcorn seems to be OK if he has less than 1/2 cup and not around anything else considered a limited item. Pirate's booty and cheetos seem to be OK.
I have made tacos (before I trialed the tortilla chips) but he refuses to eat them.
I made "corn dogs" by wrapping the cornmeal pizza dough from Trader Joes around a hot dog and baking it. He took a couple of bites of the bread, but wouldn't touch the hot dog. I thought they tasted pretty good. Trying to remember if there was a reaction to the cornmeal dough, but it's a bit foggy. I have not tried it again.

I make corn dogs the same way! I use to make my own dough before Trader Joe's started selling it. I also found some "mini corn dogs" at Trader Joe's that were wrapped in filo/phyllo dough-the hot dog was more of a small sausage size. NO sugar in the dough or the weiner, and they were REALLY good--too much fat and calories to eat on a regular basis though.
I assumed you used the Hebrew National hot dogs for him--I coat the dogs in mustard before wrapping them.
